2006 Penn State Open - Live Results!

Currently I'm travelling west on I-84 in Connecticut (Don't worry... Dave's driving... I'm in the passenger seat) on my way to State College, PA to help run the Penn State Open.

I started a web page: http://www.prisedefer.com/Results/Tournaments/PSO2006/ for live results posting.

I am currently working on posting seeding lists. If you are going, or know people are going, could you please check the initial seedings and report any errors / omissions as far as ratings go to me? (either via PM or emailing me: wayne at prisedefer dot com).

Thanks... and see you in State College.

First Iteration of all six seeding lists are up.

I am about to go through and add national points information... then I'll be looking at missing classification years.

Anastasia Ferdman should be an A 2006; she won the Nittany Lion Open in October, which was an A rated competition

Not sure if this transmission would make it in time but....

DO NOT take I-78! (I don't think your route will take you that way)

My bus was detoured through boondocks and it cost extra 2 hours of delay.
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

Scratch Gabrielle Aiuto - Northwestern WE - she had foot surgery last week and will only be cheerleading at this event!

Anastasia is updated, Gabbrielle is scratched, and we're on I-84 about 15mi from the PA line.

New Seeding lists have been posted for the womens events using information from the USFA points lists. Refresh your page, as the pdf files should now end in 2.pdf.

Update: Men's second iteration seeding posted (with national points data). just passing mile marker 14.4 on 84... mapping program says 165mi to go.

Hmm. Isn't Szot, Northwestern WF, the one who tore her ACL last weekend at the Remenyik?

Keep in mind, referees, coaches and staff are all invited to dinner (free!) at a certain tavern after Sat events are over, courtesy of EK.

Thank you for having this web site! It is a great thing for those of us who have fencers there.

Doris said she wanted to rest... understandable.

Everyone looking at the results who wasn't there may be saying, "Hmm... What's with this extra file in Men's Epee & Men's Sabre?"

I figured I'd answer the question before it was posed.

Saturday morning, I asked EK if we were using just the 3rd round of pools, or the 2nd and 3rd rounds of pools to seed the DE table. His response was "Both rounds."... so I happily went through the day using both rounds for BOTH qualifying and seeding purposes.

    Oops...

It turns out, we were only supposed to use the results from both rounds for the seeding of the DE Table, NOT who actually is in the table.

We found this out when a fencer who thought they should have made it into the DEs didn't...

I talked to EK about it, and it was decided that we would remake the Table using the results from Round 3 to promote, and the combination of rounds 2&3 to seed.

I made this change, and as a result, there were one or two fencers who didn't make the cut when they originally had (and vice versa).

The change was also made for the DEs in epee as they hadn't started yet.

I hope I didn't shortchange any fencers in the Womens' events, or any Men's foil fencers who should have made the cut and didn't.

    On our way home...

    current position:
    41.14N 75.50W (Wilkes - Barre, PA)

Absolutely DID have an effect in WE. Holly Buechel went 1-4 in the third round, and under the system that you just mentioned would not have advanced to DE's. It also appears that Lauren Willock would have dropped (she did worse in the third round than Kristin Howell, the top person not promoted). I can only assume that there are other similar situations that would have resulted in fencers switching from promoted to eliminated and vice versa. That's just from spot checking the people who promoted with 5/9 records and the top 4/9 person and comparing and wasn't an exhaustive search by any means.

This is where it really hurts that the format isn't published to the teams. There is no way for us to check what is being done and help ensure that mistakes of this type don't occur. Where the round breaks are going to occur isn't announced, etc.

This is the same problem I have with NIWFA Christmas Invitationals---- And furthermore, last year when a number of us VERY politely went to ask exactly what the process was for reseeding, we were yelled at.

I'm under the impression that because of that (and a few other reasons) we won't be going to the Christmas Invite this year.

Of course, we do have to show up for NIWFA Championships.... (*grumble*)

I'm amazed reading about all these scratches made. Do fencers really sign up for competitions and "forget" to give the organisers notice that they're unable to participate?! How old are these kids? Simply amazing.

Despite the fact that this is an "Open individual" tournament it's still usually overseen by the collegiate teams of the fencers themselves. Scratches and changes aren't that uncommon. Sometimes coaches may decide to change which fencers are selected for trips etc and sometimes injuries occur within a couple of days of departure etc. I know that if I injured something a week before the tournament my athletic training staff would probably have me rehabbing all week so that I'd have a chance to fence the next week; the decision as to whether I was fit to fence wouldn't be made until the day or two before departure. I'm sure the situation is the same for many collegeiate fencers.

I'm more amazed that the format of the competition isn't published beforehand and adhered to.
