Kill him with kindness.
It will either radically alter his/her view of you and force a change in approach and attitude to match yours, or, drive him/her stark raving mad that you can be so nice when the boss is not. Either way you have the fun of watching them squirm while they try to adapt to your new approach.

i've thought about that, relocate to an area where there is more fencing, get away from the crazies etc, but on closer inspection i know that's just running away from something that i perceive as being icky instead of hanging in there with the program, besides the boss who is totally insane!!! just bought me new office furniture and it wouldn't be a good time to resign.
i have such good ideas!

But, what makes you think that those "well-schooled people" were not themselves loonies?
It's the ones who are utterly certain of their own sanity whom I worry about, myself. A little bit of self-doubt is a healthy thing! Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you!
