Schermaonline interviews Peter Joppich, Torino 2006 World Foil Champion

I'd like to signal an interesting interview conducted by E. Loescher of Schermaonline with German foil champion Peter Joppich, two times world champion in men's individual foil (Havana 2003, Torino 2006).

This is the direct link to the English translation:

and this is the link to the original interview in German:

    Enjoy it!

    SCHERMAONLINE:
What do you think about Sanzo's antics? Do you think he crossed the line?

    JOPPICH:
I really did not catch much of Sanzo's comments. Our bout was practically over and I was about to unhook. So I turned my back to Sanzo and the referee and I was just concentrating on myself.
    What did Sanzo do/say?
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

That makes Joppich the same age as my brother, and I really can't imagine him being a world champion, let alone that fit or athletic

I enjoyed the interview with Joppich and I was surprised also to find out that at 23 he's already twice world champion, after winning his first world championship as a 20 year old in Havana. I also liked the photos included in the interview. I would have liked though some more "technical" questions about how the Germans in general and Joppich in particular handled the transition from the "old" to the "new" foil rules and about his training regime. After all this is what we all want to learn from these champions, isn't it?

Great article though and thank you for pointing it out.

You can watch much nicer versions of the same thing here: http://www.fencingchannel.tv/cms/index.php?id=1716

I've love to know about Sanzo's "antics." That's such a loaded term.
The solution to your problem is to fence another weapon.
