Hello All,
So I was looking for a new sport. I'm 37 years old. I have boxed, wrestled, trained in Judo, Jujutsu (extensively), and Karate. I
LOVE combat sports!!! Anyway, my mother-in-law mentions off handedly one day that she might like to try fencing. I think to myself "now that might be fun", so I went to the nearest club and signed up. That was about three months ago, and I have been going 2-3 times a week since then. Now I am totally hooked. This is one of the best sports
EVER!!!
What I love the most about fencing so far is the fact that I can work out full speed with very little risk of injury (burises don't count as injury in my book). That means I can get a serious workout every time I train. I also like the fact that big, small, male, female, strong, weak, young, and old fencers are all on at least "nearly even" playing terms. Skilled fencers of any size and shape seem to beat less skilled fencers fairly consistently regardless of the size/weight differences. I know this because I'm a fairly big, strong, tough guy who gets whupped by the ladies nearly every time.

It sure is fun though.
I have taken a liking to epee over foil. It seems to be the most martial of the weapons, at least from the standpoint of "realisim" in competition. I have yet to try sabre, as they don't offer it at my club, but would like to try it someday. I'm in no hurry though, as I have a long way to go with epee and foil before I even resemble a "good" fencer. I still can't wait for my first tournament though, even if I get my butt kicked as I surely will. No matter what happens, I think I will likely be a fencer forever.
