    F.net Access issues?

Okay, am I the only one who has experienced access issues with F. net the week or so?
That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again.

Yes, it's been down a lot, but also something has been f'ing with the post timestamps so the post order gets really weird.

It's happening to me as well
I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of; the mastery of the thing!

Fencing.Net experienced downtime when I was at Memphis on Sunday/Monday and again this morning.

There have also been a few other instances of spottyness in terms of the overall server speed and reliability.

I pride myself on keeping this site up and running and available so I've already started to process of moving to a new server.

The new fencing.net server will have:
    - better datacenter access
    - more dedicated CPU, RAM and space

This will help get fencing.net back to my gold standard of realiability.

The one thing that I'm really fussing over is the database move. There are a LOT of forum threads and the forums database alone is almost 1GB. That doesn't include the news side of the house.

I'll be moving things over to the "new" site behind the scenes with the main backup and once everything is tested I'll do the cutover with an incremental update so we don't lose any posts.

Announcements will be made about the times so that everyone can antipate the downtimes.

    Craig

My trend of being unable to access the forum during slow times at work, and then it coming back when things picked up continues.

I think it would be really helpful to post an announcement about scheduled downtimes. Just a suggestion.....

his point is that they're not scheduled. might need to have some scheduled ones to eliminate the unscheduled ones

    Problem noted
    Solution determined
    Project in progress
    More to be announced later

Thank you Craig for such a great service, and the downtimes are quite a small price to pay for such a wide ranging and well done FREE site.

Do you know what is going on with the timestamp issue? I thought I was going crazy when I saw people answering questions before they had been posted... It is pretty easy to figure out once you know it is happening, but I was wondering if you had any idea of the cause.

    Thanks again!

Thanks Craig! Your responsiveness has been noted, and appreciated.

For the record, I wasn't complaining, I was just trying to figure out if it was a problem on my end or not. Since I'd not heard anyone ELSE mention anything, I thought there was the possibility of a problem on my end.

Craig, it sounds like you have control on the issue. The only thing now is to have a meeting. So "shoot" an email out, for a 'power lunch', so we can 'brainstorm', and use our 'synergies' to come up with the 'ideal' way to 'put this to bed.' Order the bagels, cold cut tray, and diet cokes, and 'we're good to go.' All this to go public, pre-date the stock options, and then run off on a yacht in the South Pacific before you get arrested.

in order for us to synergize the mindshare of the page, we need to make sure the web engineering's polychronistic time has sustainability. this may require us to leverage a paradigm shift into web 2.0. making a breakthrough like this into a next generation framework will definitely require best practices, but will lead to empowerment of the masses.

When I can't access f.net, I like to pretend it's because my IP has been blocked from the site... and I'm like.... FINALLY!
    Take your time. Read carefully.

Then clearly the solution is to post announcements about the upcoming unscheduled downtimes...
