Saw is awesome (As is saw 2, to a lesser extent) but that isn't reaaaaally a horror movie.

I haven't seen all the classics, but Halloween(various ones) and the latest Amityville Horror are pretty awesome.

Towards the end, when Lecter has gotten his hands on the two FBI agents (Moore and Liotta), fries up part of Liotta's brain and feeds it back to him. at that point, I took a casual look around at the audience, and much to my shock, most of them were actually LAUGHING at the scene.

Still scares me that people would find this funny under any circumstances...

Few things to consider:

A) Some people deal with scary things in a lot of things. I know people who laugh uncontrollably when in high stress situations, it's just an outlet for energy.

B) Some things meant to be hokey can be extremely funny and everyone has a slightly different sense of humor, an example.

Spoilers....

In the movie Reign of Fire there's a large American man at the end of the film who decides to try and decapitate a dragon by jumping off a large building and lopping off its head. As the dragon flys at him he leaps into the air, grim music plays, and he flies through the destroyed remnants of a large city. The screen goes into slow motion, and he brings the axe over his head, then...the dragon eats him. Completely anticlimatic and it ruins the cliche. Things speed up. I wasn't expecting it.


I found it hilarious (with a few other people on the theatre) but the vast majority of the audience just looked at us funny.....

True, but the chances of finding 100+ people to fit the first category in the same theater at any one time are a bit low...

I also understand your second point, and that may be what scared me... That the director actually may have tried to elicit just this reaction. A sad commentary on how jaded we have become...
