Foil (French) point length advantages? This question might apply to other tip types and
epee as well, but I noticed it with French foil tip
points.
I have Triplette foils with French tips; I also have
Absolute foils with French tips. The distance that
the Triplette points can travel is greater, i.e. they
stick out further. Yes, they work for the full distance.
There would seem to be an advantage to the Triplette,
because, if plunged all the way, there is more let-off
and therefore greater contact time. This contact time
must be a continuous contact for 13/100 seconds.
The Triplette does have a stronger spring however,
so maybe this evens out.
The Triplette point would seem to be more vulnerable
to the serious beating that foil points get.
Do you have experience with this?

luv2fence its a trade-off. since we're talking about contact time, i'm assuming we're referencing flicking, since thats what the change in contact times have the biggest effect upon. the trade-off exists in the slightly increased chance to land a flick, traded with the easier to break tip. if you flick a lot, french barrels will crack a lot more often for you. -
I do not flick. No, I do not flick, I just have not learned that yet.
I had known timings were changed, to make the flick
more difficult, but I totally forgot about the flick.
If there are more of you who have experience
relative to the flick, please post. More data helps.
I was thinking of someone starting an agressive
attack covering a long distance fast.
I backup and extend my arm for a counter-attack.
Either of us might only be making contact for a
short time.
For me as the counter-attacker, I will
be trying to keep contact for the minimum time,
trying for one light. Or I will try to get my light on
before his final action. Or I will extend, then parry.
This is the most contact-time critical for me, I think.

Array Given that the blink of an eye is about 20 times slower than the time required to set off the point, I don't think that you'll run into much problems with that either way.
The length of the foil point doesn't really matter so much as the amount of time the contacts stay in contact with each other. There is nothing that I can see in either point that would suggest that one actually keeps contact any longer than another.
I moved away from french points a long time ago because they just are not as reliable as others on the market.

French barrel weaker than German? Noodle,
I have bent barrels but I have never
seen anybody's barrel break. I do not
have wide experience, however.
On this forum, I read that LP is stronger,
but are you saying "German barrels are
also stronger"?

luv2fence I've cracked a French barrel in half during a flick.
Basically, French is the worst tip you can buy. -
