| Wellcome Netjackal.
Why you do not ask your coach?

Is your back foot lifting up off the floor a bit after the lunge is done? If so, bend the back knee in your on guard stance to put a bit more weight there. You will be able to push off of the back foot much better. Make sure you do not lean too far forward or back.
Are you kicking out with your front foot? When you lunge, make sure to kick out from the knee (not the hip) so that your front foot is extended. Make sure it is not too far off the ground at any time (your heel should almost skim along a few inches above the ground) and do not bring it back in. When your front heel hits the ground, your body's momentum will carry you forward into a good long lunge.
Finally, do a lot of lunges! Stretch and exercise often to build strength and flexibility, and practice your lunges, preferably with a coach or experienced fencer there to help you.
Happy fencing!

| To have a good lunge, you have to have a good butt first.
First, find the butt you would like to obtain.... then meditate on the "isness" of said butt.
Thank you FOTL.

| We've been making stairs a regular part of our practices now. You really do notice a difference after a week or so, you get much more power and distance on the lunge. Just find a set of stairs and run up and down. Add more laps as you get better.

| The key to a fast *lunge* is a fast *thrust*. Work on penetrating first with the hand, then let the feet push you that last 6 inches to get the touch. Work on blending the foot into the very end of the thrust so that the tip is always accellerating forward. General strength is secondary.

| Ok, on a serious note, here are some tips.
1. If you're fat, get thin.
2. Practice your lunge..... alot.
3. Strengthen your legs (Dont ask how, go see a personal trainer).
4. Get flexible
5. Spend some time working on kinesthetic awareness of the various muscles and processes that make up the lunge, here are a couple...
a. work on feeling the glutes of your back leg pushing off. Use this to thrust forward with your hips.
b. feel the quadricep of your back leg contract. Work on making it stronger.

| NetJackal. Visualize. Watch this video. Visualize. Do you see it? It's beautiful! it is aesthetic. Lunging is the masterpiece of fencing. Visualize.
You ask how to improve your distance and speed. You get both of these with better technique and more power. Once you start lunging properly throw every ounce of energy into it. Don't shoot to go half a foot, go 20 feet forward! Is your intention to hit your opponent with that lunge? Then put all your energy into your lunge! There is never too much energy in a lunge!
NetJackal, do you have the balls to obliterate your opponent? HIT HIM!
You ask if 8 hours a week of exercise is enough?
The answer is No. Do you like fencing? Do you love fencing? Is fencing your life? Then I say...shoot for the ballpark of 168 hours per week would be better. Practice until you are vommiting and peeing blood OK?

| Start by learning proper mechanics. Ask some better fencers to watch you or if possible a coach. Once the person is satisfied that your lunge is OK technically, then start worrying about getting it faster or more powerful.
Starting from a good engarde, begin extending the tip, kick your front foot out, and push explosively from the back leg. Keep your butt tucked in and your back straight. Keep the hand high. Look at the target. etc... ad inifitum. Just keep asking people what you need to work on and do it. |
