Lorenzo, you don't need other people's pats on the back to feel good about the tournament. Just be sure that your focus is on your next victory, not your last.

I was particularly annoyed at the reff who seemed to think the work was a happy grounded place and any touch was probably good. That brought back a lot of PTSD from my foil days (I sort of have this phobia about crappy refereeing costing me bouts. The relative lack of potential for a referee to really screw up was part of the appeal of epee to me) and that coupled with losing, something I don't do well at the best of times, really brought out my inner jerk/thug.
On the plus side it motivated me to work hard on dealing with a posted French fencer, so it all worked out in the end. But yeah, the next event we are both at, lets try to do better in our pools. I would like a rematch, but preferably much later than the first round...

| Yeah. Really Lorenzo the insinuation had nothing to do with you personally. As a matter of fact it related directly to three (maybe four but I doubt it b/c really Noodle doesn't know the area as well I do) fencers in the 16. If you really want to know who they are I suggest you look at the list again and think for 30sec. but you probably already have it figured out. Like any epee tournament worth its salt there were upsets and the occasional easier path/highly fortunate pairing (which actually more or less explains the three as far as I can tell), but this tourney was certainly no pushover. We've all looked at tourney results at some point and seen certain names in certain places and wondered why we didn't show up to fence (either literally or figuratively) that day. I know I definitely kind of wished I had shown up to fence epee on Sunday (knowing my luck I would have drawn Fechter1 and lost 15-14 yet again though ).
As for the reffing I can say that I definitely had a guy yell and slam a weapon and barely miss having me pull out the first card that my hand landed on (I was too lazy to put down my timer). Why? I had the same action that Darius discussed TotD acknowledge...except I called it the other way (actually this was on of Darius' pool bouts I think). Guy threw a hissy fit; clearly it doesn't pay to call a one tempo attack/counterattack in favor of the attack instead of the attack into imaginary preparation. I'm not going to say that the saber reffing was suspect at times but I saw a lot of fencers complaining. Both fencers in the final seemed rather pissed at several calls. I was, however, entertained which is always a plus.

| You know, now that I think of it there were some notable A's that did not make it out but that I would have expected to see. I know that Kashi was home with the new tyke and Jeff was running the tourney, but there were some other notables I would have expected to see out there like:
Isaac Erbele (common, they would not have noticed if you had snuck away for the kickoff and we miss you...)
Hans Hammer
Ludo LeMeunier
Byron Neslund
Kaz Campe
Dan Wheeler
If they had been in the meet grinder as well it would have been really interesting, although I might just have ran away if there had been 9 MORE A's at the event... Still, I missed seeing them out there and it is always fun to wonder what would have been different. Maybe next year...

| Hans signed up. I'm not sure why he didn't show.
Ludo no longer lives in the country.
Byron is seriously injured after a huge come-back vs. NYAC at Nationals.
Kaz rarely fences in local competitions anymore.
Dan is pretty seriously injured, too.

| If I remember the seeding into the DE table correctly, NONE of the A rated fencers were seeded higher than 10th after pools. All of the top seeds into the pools dropped one (or more bouts) in the first round. This meant that there were a lot of 32 matchups that were un-expected.

| Brent Kelly ended up seeded third (there was a mistake in the seeding initially), but yeah, I know a lot of people dropped bouts.
And ok guys, I get it. My bad.v |

edit to note, they're actually almost the exact same distance, i just looked it up. and i'd bet there was a much higher density of northern fencers there than fencers south of VA.

And ok guys, I get it. My bad.v | Yea, Brent graduated from high school and is now attending college at Columbia. Note for all of the east coasters - he's a product of the same coaching system that produced the French twins, namely, Jim Carpenter, and came in 3rd in points in the Southwest Section Circuit Cup, last season. So, ya'll may not know him, but don't think he's easy pickings.

The young ones usually don't get very far though, and don't seem to develop the high level skills to compete successfully at the next level. The older ones generally prefer not to test their skills outside their comfort zone. There are, of course, exceptions that prove the rule.
But if you think Brent is good (and, he is!) wait till the next several hit the airwaves...
Or come down to an SSCC event and test them out for yourself!

If he calls me "Sir" one more time, I'll have to deck 'em. (kidding). I feel old enough after fencing him.
Carpenter rocks (heard he is comming back up this way).

I wish I had him in my bout against AR because I think it would have made a difference. The other guy was ok (but not enough for the top 8) most of the time but he had trouble with blade actions (couldn't see low beats or attacks that hit off the guard). |

| Yeah, you really don't get much nicer than Brent. And he's pretty badass (though he may not be as good for a bit because he just switched coaches). A ton of fun to have on the squad at CU already, and the season hasn't even started yet. |

| Hallman taking 8th is disgusting.
Oh, and I don't know about anyone else who fenced Saturday, but I sure as hell did enjoy falling on my ass during the process of making slow retreats backwards, while wearing slip-resistant raquetball shoes. |
