| Nanaimo, BC Fencing Hey all,
Just moved to BC from the east coast and I'm looking to continue fencing. I've dug around the BC website looking for clubs in Nanaimo to no avail, and I've e-mailed a couple of the BC fencing execs and haven't gotten a response. Soooo .... does anyone know any clubs in or around Nanaimo that I could get involved with? I'm primarily interested in foil.
Thanks,
John |

| John,
I'll PM the info rather than posting phone numbers and contact info. You'll have something later today or tomorrow.

John | There isn't a club in Nanaimo but there is a fencer from Nanaimo who drives to Victoria at least a couple times a week to fence. This person was looking to start a club in Nanaimo as well. By the sounds of it there is some interest there from the community, so if I were you I would talk to this person.
I will PM you the info about this fencer. |

| There isn't much in the way of coaching on the Island (apologies if this offends anyone who fences there) but there are some fencers.
Try to get into Vancouver from time to time and train at Dynamo (who have training camps occasionally) or Vanguard. |

| Monica Kwan is at the Victoria club. She's ranked as one of the top women foilists... she's either a natural talent or is getting some good coaching or both.

| I would think Monica's coaching experiences come primarily from all those training camps she attends in Poland, China etc.
And the occasional Jerzy lesson fencergrl .
So she had some good coaching and probably has some natural talent too. |

| She also has the quirky style of hers...
I just saw that she took Gold in the Commonwealth games. That's awesome!

Still, gold is good. |

| SJB, I am a very good friend of Moni's and I guarantee you that she would attribute all of her success to coaching of Dr. Nan Sang Ho, head coach of Victoria Fencing Club, who gives her two lessons a day. The only other two people from whom she took lessons over the last year or so are Ayach Bounachada and the national team coach Dominique Tesseire (sp?).
And more than anything else it's her own hard work and a desire to train every day even when she is sick. And ya, good on her for the double Gold in Belfast. It's awesome to see Canada kick butt at some sort of the international level !!!
BTW, SJB, are you planning to swing by Vampoover for the Nationals in December? Hope to see you there. |

As for Vancouver, if I can get a cheap plane ticket I am there.
I'd also like to see the new Dynamo facility too if possible. |
