What's all this rating malarky?

Like the new look but I'm wondering what the rating thingee's for.

I see some people have had their rating allocated already. So what's the criteria boys and girls...

Hi Gav! You can turn off the rating by going into your profile. It asks if you want it or not.

I took it off of my profile, I think the concept is weird and some people may abuse it.

i thought it looked cute, but then i'm weird, i rated arcon, willow, moon, some others a 5 just for being on the board, and being nice. ,
craig was giving us the opportunity to rate each other like in fencing, so i give you all a five five five five five 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 (except gw who rates 2 on the fencing board: BOOOOOOO)

Yes and I see that neevel, who was rated a ***** has turned his off too. Ratings like this seem to make a lot of people uncomfortable despite their usage for many many years in the human resources departments of medium to large companies. There is a welcome trend taking place in these rating systems to make them less emotional and more performance based. Ratings based on "How well do I like you?" are practically worthless unless you are running a pen-pal website or something like that. Do we really care? I'm thinking "NO". If you spend a little time on this site, you can figure out who you want to listen to without being guided by someone else's opinion.
In summation, I would say they are fairly harmless, but completely un-necessary.
