| Hello Hi, I am Andrea. We just got my son involved in fencing as there has been no other sports he has been interested in. When researching it in the area we were excited to find out we actually had a fencing club really close by. He is 9 and very excited. So excited in fact he wants to go every day... not that they have club every day .
He is at fencing club right now as a matter of fact.
Anyhow I am learning with him (about the sport, not how to fence) and I figured this would be a great place for more info.
So there you are... me=mom to aspiring fencer.
Call me Andrea!

| Andrea,
Welcome to you and your son! I hope you both enjoy learning about fencing, but I have to tell you that you'll learn faster if you join him in lessons and drills. Fencing will make much more sense when you have a foil in your hand and your legs ache. But it's a good ache.
Best to you,
Call me Brian!

| Hi Andrea, welcome to the forum!
Brian is right (well except for the 'foil' bit ) -- don't hesitate to take up fencing too. It really is a great sport, and one for life. You can be as little or much competetive as you want, you will still have a great time learning together with your son.
Have fun!

| Hi Andrea-
Welcome to the sport and don't just stay on the sideline. Get out and try it, you never know where it may lead you

| Thanks for the replies... truthfully I would take up fencing but club is in the evenings and I have two more very small children and daddy works at night. So for now this is where I am at. Maybe Erick can teach me at home

| Maybe when the other children get a bit older then? Welcome to the forum, and I hope you and your son stay excited about the sport for a very long time to come!

| It's me! I thought I may find you, but I did not thing it would be in the first post I checked.
So, yeah, I really do not post, as my profile shows, but I have picked up so much here. I like to read about what others have to say about their coaches and clubs, and I have learned a lot about maintaining our equipment.
(and I have spent more than one lunch hour reading some of the more "dramatic" posts)
When all the "moms" are in, it would not be hard to talk them into watching your other two, assuming you gain a comfort level with them to take that kind of responsibility, for you to try it out a little. But I got a lot out of just watching before I ever picked up a blade - but you have quite a handful.
We, or Coach, do have more spare equipment, but it has not been coming back regularly from the classes he has at the activity center.
If I have my way, I am looking into moving us into a rec center down the road so we can have club and classes in the same place.
I am sorry things get a little crazy in that room and it can be hard to have any kind of meaningful discussion. Coach was in a bit of a mood and I was having an off day.
I borrowed equipment for a while when I first started, but it was a big relief to get my own. (I broke one of Michael's blades and felt terrible about it for the longest time.) |

| Read the USFA parents guide, I think the Pacific Coast Circuit has one as well that's decent....
Fencing might be hard to understand at first, and frusterating but you'll get the hang of it. Watching as a parent is hard for a nonfencer, but it gets better. |
