| New player suggestions anyone? Ok, i am completely new to fencing. My friend gave me the idea because his mom wants him to do some type of activity besides tennis. So he asked me to do it with him and i think it sounds pretty sweet. I read a lot on the internet about it so i kinda know the basics.
I just wanted to know if its worth getting my own gear right now, and what type i should get.
Considering ive never touched a sabre, epee, or foil, i dont need any top-of-the-line stuff (duh, obviously, no kidding, etc). The only fencing club i could find near me was $100 (a month) to become a member of the club. If you payed the membership fee it is only $15 a lesson, and they supply your own gear. If you dont, then its $25 a lesson, but they dont supply gear. And i know my parents wont pay $100 a month to be a member (because we're pretty poor), so i kinda need to know what gear would be best to get for a begginer (i found a set for $110, came with a jacket, mask, and glove...non-electric....or another set with a jacket, glove, and pants for $101). I was thinking just get the second one, and buy a mask seperate (since the mask i found was $55, and the cheapest pants i could find were $80). I found a sabre for $35 (+ or - a few for either epee or foil), non electric. |

| Honestly, if you're not going to compete right away, it's probably better to get a mask instead of the pants, because you'll absolutely need the mask for practice, but regular shorts or sweats will do for practice. I waited six months to get my own gear, and paid around $300 for everything I needed (electric included) because I'm going to start competing this Friday, and I still don't practice in my actual fencing pants. By all means, feel free to go ahead and get the second set and a separate mask if you want, but if I were you, I wouldn't. Best of luck!

| Welcome to fencing and to the forum!
Hold off on buying your gear until you're sure you're going to stick with fencing. When you are, buy it one or two pieces at a time, instead of all at once. Good Luck!

| Wow, I just realized how absolutely ridiculous I sounded in that last post. Apologies.
