Array How does an ADULT fencing camp sound? I have been tossing around a few ideas with some folks here about putting together an adult fencing camp.
KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ONLY IN THE DREAM STAGE!!!
How does this sound?
A long weekend.
Possibly in summer.
Possible locations either a college campus or
a really nice club I know of.
It might include in addition to fencing:
Tai Chi
Stretching clinic
Armoury Clinic
Massage Therapy
Fencing instruction
A private lesson
Bouting
And a tournament
If this is the kind of camp you would like to attend let me know. Only those who would seriuosly considered should email me at:
DamedEscrime@fencingmail.com
Also let me know if there is something else you'd like to see offered.
I know I would want to go to something like this.
I'd need 25 -30 adults to make this work.

Array DamedEscrime,
I would be more than just passively interested in just such a idea. Adult fencers in a three day weekend camp. A Friday night gathering to meet and mix with the people attending, Saturday learning, and a Sunday tournament....
May I suggest Neevel as an armourer....
Pardon my musing.
It really does sound quite wonderful. -

Array exactly what I had in mind Jeeves and Neevel is close by. He would be my first pick.

Array I would definitely be up for this!
Hope you get enough interested response to move to the planning stage... Nothing is more frightening than ignorance in action. -

Array Any thoughts forming on when, where, how much and expected skill level of the participants? Methix

Array I'd possibly be interested, mostly depending on when it was scheduled and the level of the camp. As it is summer can get a bit cramped with Nationals and Coaches College (for those of us who go).

I'd love to come but I'm stuck in good ole England
Anyone from the North East of England wanna fence? The best defense - dont get hit. -

Array Here's my suggestion:
Have it in Tampa FL, over the winter holidays time. (If USFA doesn't/can't schedule a winter NAC in a more temperate climate, we can do it ourselves!)
Make it a week long.
Arrive Friday. Party all night.
Saturday: 10:00AM to noon for footwork and calisthenics. Lunch and rest to 2PM. Blade work and all-body work to 5PM. Dinner to 7PM. Discussion on how to fit fencing into your budget :-)
Sunday: Morning jog. Stretching, calisthenics, and footwork. Lunch. Blade work. Evening: armoring Q & A.
Monday: morning jog, stretching, calisthenics, footwork. Afternoon: specific tactics, practice bouting with video tape analysis (later that week). Evening: bout committee work.
Tuesday: morning: jog, stretching, calisthenics, footwork. Afternoon: return to fundamentals (basic bladework, mixed together with footwork). Evening: what the younger whippersnappers are doing nowadays and how to prepare/defend/exploit it using a 40-year old body.
Wednesday: morning: the usual. Afternoon: Implementing the tactics discussed the night before. Evening: hot-tub and sauna party. (No kids allowed!)
Thursday: morning: bouting. Afternoon: analysis of the video tapes from Monday. Evening: Refereeing, discussions on right-of-way (especially that).
Friday: morning and afternoon: big tournament. Evening: party!
Saturday: morning: final stretching, tips to take home, drills. Afternoon: tinkering lessons to fine tune some things. Evening: more parties.
Sunday: return home (or stay an extra week!) -

Array Just out of curiosity, when you say "adult" what's the cutoff? I'm 22, so I don't know where that puts me. Here we have a lot of 13-16 year olds. I don't know what it's like other places. Methix

All of the camps I've heard of before are for about 13-18 yr. olds, so unless you make the adult camp for something like 19 and up, it would leave people like Methix and myself stranded in the middle... And although I never went to camp when I was in HS, I would absolutely love to do it now... So if anyone knows of any summer training camps/programs for the college age crew, let me know!! And btw, I would definitly include some cross-weapon training in your program... "I've had just about enough of your Vassar-bashing, young lady!" -Homer Simpson -

Array All will depend upon who you manage to line up to instruct, I daresay. ( Well, ok, not all: location, dates and cost will also enter into it. ) Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Personally, if you are of drinking age, in my book you are an adult. There are just certain things only adults can do. I was think of people closer to my age which is vet, but hey, seniors would be good too. CAUTION: The heart is a fragile thing. Handle with care. -

Array Shamelessly plagiarizing Eric's thoughtful post, here's my take on a camp:
Have it in Tampa FL, over the winter holidays time. (If USFA doesn't/can't schedule a winter NAC in a more temperate climate, we can do it ourselves!). I'm not much on cruise ships (spent a summer working on one as a kid), but it might be cool to have it on a ship. Logistics would definitely be difficult but the non-fencing SO could be enjoying the cruise while the fencing partner sweats, thereby blinding the SO to the cost of this "adult camp".
Make it a week long.
Arrive Friday. Party all night. Post bail.
Saturday: 10:00AM to noon for Bloody Marys and Advil. Lunch and rest to 2PM. Blade work and all-body work to 5PM. Dinner to 7PM. Discussion on how to fit fencing into your budget :-)
Sunday: Morning jog (400 yards or less). Stretching, calisthenics, and footwork. Lunch. Blade work. Evening: armoring Q & A. (leave this out. Every time I fence it's armoring Q & A, or, better yet, have optional open bar for armorers to complain about armoring. Have drunken blade rewiring and weapon assembly time trials.)
Monday: morning jog (500 yards or less: See? we're getting fitter!!), stretching, calisthenics, footwork. Afternoon: specific tactics, practice bouting with video tape analysis (later that week). Evening: bout committee work.
Tuesday: morning: jog (200 yards or less: recovery day), stretching, calisthenics, footwork. Afternoon: return to fundamentals (basic bladework, mixed together with footwork). Evening: what the younger whippersnappers are doing nowadays and how to prepare/defend/exploit it using a 40-year old body.Add a section on sneaky tricks to humiliate and dishearten our youth.
Wednesday: morning: the usual. Afternoon: Implementing the tactics discussed the night before. Evening: hot-tub and sauna party. (No kids allowed!)
Thursday: morning: bouting. Afternoon: analysis of the video tapes from Monday. Evening: Refereeing, discussions on right-of-way (especially that).Isn't this épée camp? What do we do in the meantime?
Friday: morning and afternoon: big tournament. Evening: party!
Saturday: morning: Bloody Marys and Advil final stretching, tips to take home, drills. Afternoon: tinkering lessons to fine tune some things. Physical therapy and possible surgery Evening: more parties.
Sunday: return home (or stay an extra week!)
Seriously, I think Eric has a good syllabus here. I'd go.
Eric, get a couple of name coaches and fencers there, and I think you'll have a winner!

Array That sounds like fun, I may be interested in attending. I can only take a week off if it is one of the last two weeks of the month though. -

Array I wanna come but according to some people's definition I'm not techincally an adult.... Hm! Sounds like a blast though. Hope you all get it off the ground, even if I can't come! -

I am too.
Particularly about the issues with "selling it" to the SOs. (I'm serious about the Bloody Marys, too).
You know, if you could package it up with a cruise to Alaska, she'd be dragging me.
