| I'm only 5, but I want to fence! hi, I'm Riley and I love swords and I want to know how to take some classes in my area...Windsor, Colorado, near Fort Collins and Greeley. How much do classes cost? How old do you have to be? How big are the suits? and how heavy are the swords. If you could let me know I'll talk with my mom and see if I can start soon. Thanks, Riley Boy |

Good luck!

Thanks, Riley Boy | geee... are you sure you're 5? if only I could type like that and use a computer well enough to find forums such as this when I was 5!
- the uniforms arn't that heavy, but it can get hot an stuffy in them when you sweat. You can get uniforms and masks in different size - it would be quite amusing if it was one size fits all... Equipment is also expensive, and i suspect most clubs don't carry club gear they would fit the average 5 year old.
- the weapons vary in weight and length. Seeing as you're so young you would most likely start on a foil with a size 0 blade, which is lighter and shorter than full size blades.
- as for how old you have to be, this questions depends on various things and is different for everyone. As you wirte so well and clearly i'm sure you have the disipline to fence and not act dangerously with the weapons. but how tall are you? and more importanly can you find other people your size to fence with. Though size doesn't really matter when you get better at fencing, it's probably a good idea to start off and learn basics with people your size.
- as for where you can get lessons and how much they cost, i'm afraid i can't help you as i live in a land far far away.
I hope this helps. Good luck with it all. |

| Riley boy, you should fence foil, because you seem smart for your age. Don't listen to epee fencers or sabre fencers because they will stifle your intellectual growth.

| Hello Riley. I like your writing too. I also live in Colorado. It's a great state isn't it?
I'm not too far from Boulder,CO. It's South-West of Windsor. I go to a club there called Northern Colorado Fencers. It a really nice place to fence, and everybody there is pretty friendly. Gary Copeland is the head coach. Their phone number is (303) 443-6557. And here is the website of Northern Colorado Fencers. http://www.ncfencers.org/
They have a lot of children taking fencing classes. I think they have some equipment that could fit you.
You can tell your dad that if you take highway 25, and then turn right on highway 34, and keep going straight he can reach Boulder. He can also look on a map and I'm sure he can find it. I imagine it would take at about an hour or maybe a little less to get there. I think it's the one of the closest clubs to your town. I know it's a long drive so ask and beg your parents for their consent.
I hope you find a good place to fence soon even if it's not at NCF!
