While the original article in Portuguese is pretty easy to comprehend, the babblefish translation to English is fairly amusing:
It brandishhes: Congress WEAVES - florete yields a place to sabre, for the JO Atenas2004
Lisbon, 17 Ago (Lusa) - the extraordinary congress of the International Federacy of Brandishhes (IT WEAVES), today congregated in Lisbon, accepted the proposal to substitute in the olímpico program the test for equips of florete feminine for feminine the collective competition of sabre.
The trend, already defined since has months, was confirmed in the plenary assembly of Lisbon, that had only this point in agenda. For a majority of more than two terços (59 the favor, 23 against and two null ones), the proposal of the direcção of René Roch was successful.
The olímpico program continues to have same the 10 medals in competes. But the effective picture, with exclusion of sabre feminine, individual and for you equip, you yield to a new reality: florete, sword and sabre, individual and for you equip, for the men, all the individual weapons in for the women and only one feminine collective competition, of sword.
The picture is not still the desirable one, for René Roch, but it is "a first step" in direcção to a global reformularization for the Games Olímpicos de Pequim2008.
"It was a fruitful congress, it had an ample exchange of impressions and we finished for considering that, for now, the weapon to yield a place had to be florete, in benefit of sabre", René Roch explained.
"For 2008 we go to reorganize the problem. I think that it has a consensus in the direction to advance for mixing tests, for you equip.
Thus, nobody is of is, because it is not good for having shooting that they cannot go to the tests for you equip ", added.
Questioned on the reason of the "sacrifice" of florete, Roch considered to be this weapon, over all in feminine, "to less mediática, the one that attracts little spectators".
"it brandishhes It must evolve, not to be static. E nowadays sabre is a much more interesting weapon, that captive the public ", still said. "Clearly that it is difficult to ask for to that abdicates of a privilege that has", it added, alluding to florete.
"We think that the Comité International Olímpico goes to accept this alteration already for Atenas2004. Later, as it said, everything it will be in quarrel, of new, widened form more ", added the president of WEAVES.

Array Women's foil least spectators???? Umm if I remember correctly they had the LARGEST attendance at Sydney 2000. Would like to know where Messer Roch got his info from. Theses are evil....VERY evil, someone rescue me pls! -
Roch is the most idiotic president the FIE had and only the FIE board members are to blame!!!!!!!
They re-elected him instead of choosing Kamuti and had they chosen Kamuti none of this circus act would have happened --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Array As an aside, what the heck is a "Lisboa", anyway? Sounds like some sort of snake... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Amusing translation, but not terribly amusing content. I think that it is silly and arbitrary to say that any one weapon is more exciting to watch than another. It is true that I dislike foil, but I would not want to see it reduced because of someone else's opinion. This is ridiculous.
I love Edew's prior comment that if Rene' Roch ever acutally fenced that he'd flinch at the first sign of aggretion, too true. ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

Array Apparently, Roch was very unhappy that Flessel fenced while she was under investigation for doping.
He refused to be present at the ceremony where she received her award for winning this year's world cup. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)

Array If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Rene Roche a very good sabre fencer in his time? -

Array It was not the least number of spectators, but the least amount of teams at the last Worlds. They did not include Women's Sabre team, because this would be the first time, so it was not like they were eliminated. The IOC would not allow Men's Sabre to be eliminated, because that would eliminate Sabre Team. Remember they have those new reel-less Sabre that they have to make use of. So the winner (loser) is Women's Foil.
I really felt that was appropriate, since they are trying to entice American Television and the only team that we sent to the 2000 Olympics was Women's Foil.
Does the FIE and the IOC know what they are doing. The IOC knocked down a unique proposal of have Men and Women compete on the same team. They may not have competed against each other, but just putting them on the same team with both results would have counted and that for the first Olympics of the 21st Century would have shown they are forward thinking.
Maybe they'll bring in the skateboarders to show that they are modern. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com

Array Heh. I'm torn between going off on a rant about "Why can't everyone call countries and cities by what the NATIVES call them?" and one on "Why can't we just call them by their names in ENGLISH on an ENGLISH-SPEAKING board?"
I once called a certain city in China "Peking", and someone told me "There's no such city". I said, "Oh, very well, 'Beijing' if you insist". He said "No such city". I said, "Fine, if you want to play that game I had better never hear you say Germany or Greece or Japan or Venice or Florence or..." -

Array To indicate a departure from English, I used quotation marks.
However, most people are not aware that the main topic truly is the decision on what team format was finally voted by the FIE Congress to be proposed to the IOC for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. -
