| Basic jacket and knickers I am new to buying gear; I usually just borrow club equipment. I want to purchase a jacket and knickers. What is the best way of doing this? Online or in a store? If online, what are the best websites to order from? I live in Southern California, USA.
Also, is there enough difference between a cheap jacket or pair of knickers and an expensive one?
I'm on my my university's (UC Irvine) sabre team and I want to get my own jacket before the season starts.
Thanks.

| The diff between the $60 knickers and the $250+ ones is the material. he cheaper ones have more or less regular material (although it should at at least a 30 newton puncture resistance rating) which the high priced ones are FIE clothing...meaning they're made with ballstic fabric. You can go to US nationals with the lower end stuff....so long as it passes ther basic requirements. |

You just don't want anyone to use your name. Is it random or a pattern?

You should probably get a basic, non-FIE jacket. Absolute and Blue Gauntlet have good, cheap jackets, and I assume The Fencing Post does as well. (They're closer if you're on the West Coast.) You can get a cheap jacket, or pay $10 or $20 more to get a more comfortable one.
(Or, as mentioned, you can pay $150 more and get a better quality one, but that doesn't seem to be what you're looking for.) Quote: |

They generally last proportionally to the price, as for all fencing equipment. Of course, since they're higher quality, they will be generally more comfortable and more protective than the cheaper ones while you have them.

| The PostSport jacket and knickers from the fencing post is great. After the 20% email discount they are just as cheap as the AF and BG stuff. My friend has the PostSport uniforms and I have BG/AF stuff and I say the PostSport are much better: http://www.thefencingpost.com/Uniforms.htm

To Purple Fencer:
That's funny because I grew up in Burbank and I remember all the fencing clubs and stores they have there (much more than the average ctiy of the same size). My parents got me my sabre and mask last Christmas from a store in Burbank, but I'm not sure which one.
Thanks to everyone for all the help, but more input is of course appreciated. |

But, get a good FIE mask. The extra expense is worth it to keep your brains and your opponents blade from meeting.
And I'm sure Zz will agree with this.

| The Leon Paul non-FIE masks are also pretty nice, and just about as strong. |
