    Refereeing in the Northwestern US?

I'm wondering what the local/regional scene is like for refereeing opportunities? At the moment, I'm only going by limited sources of second-hand information in the matter, so....

Particularly, I would appreciate any information regarding collegiate refereeing. But I'm also very much interested in hearing what the USFA reffing scene is like as well.

Also, what is referee training opportunity like in that part of the country? I'd like to hear about any activities toward that objective.

In-club, local, regional, FIE/USFA, Classical, SCA, whatever and wherever a presence of a referee would be useful... I'd like to hear all about it.
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

You might want to send a PM to Peet. He's the man in the Pacific NW.

    Hey there Mauler-

I'm sure your services could be useful up here. We have a number of good refs, but certianly not the density that one finds in certain other areas of the US. Just in the past year or two, the Western WA division has been starting to hire from outside the area ($ is tight). Last year we had Hristo Hristov up for one of the bigger events.

You should talk to dberke. He's the division chair up here and has been driving a lot of the effort to hire rated refs.

There's not much scholastic or collegiate fencing up here. Every few years, some students the U of WA here in Seattle try to get a program together, and getting little suppport from the school, it fails a few years later.

It's pretty much USFA all the way up here, and like I said $ is tight.

That said, Seattle is a beautiful town to visit, and I'm sure we could find you a respectable irish car bomb somewhere!

    PM dberke.

And Reed College. Featuring the "Douglas Williams Scholarship Fencing Tournament". $10,000 in scholarship money split between the top three finishers eligible for financial aid.

To be fair, he didn't know about that when he was giving me college advice regarding Reed.

Then again, at the time he was trying to get me to go to UMass-- and failing that, Smith.

    So maybe he did know..........

Not so good to hear. What's the surrounding region like? Say, within 300 miles radius? How 'bout the Canadian side?

Or perhaps he was protecting you from prospect of 4 yrs in a dry fencing club?

There ARE. For instance, he doesn't know how to lose a bout to me. It's a serious shortcoming and he really should learn how to do it.

I suggest you practice him losing a bout to you in club, perhaps several times a day, with an appropriate substitute, and possibly speak with your coach about arranging special teaching on the subject. They're generally called lessons.

It's probly a hard subject to grasp, then.

Reed has a very small program. At University of Oregon we've tried to get a collegiate circuit together a couple times recently and it has failed miserably. The few programs out here are too far apart. We have given up and decided it's not worth the cost and effort when there are USFA tournaments within driving distance almost every weekend.

Do these weekly USFA tournaments tend to hire referees?

Generally not. There are usually enough referees in the Portland area that are associated with Northwest Fencers Club that they don't really hire. The ones in the Seattle area are the ones Peet referenced above. I don't know about sabre tournaments because most of those are hosted in a different venue by Oregon Fencing Alliance.

For classical refereeing and judging, I think they hire on occasion for tournaments at Salem Classical Fencing.

As for referee training, there seems to be one seminar every year or two in Oregon.

Are you planning a visit? A move? If you are going to be in the Seattle area, you may also want to look at what's going on in Vancouver BC. Anywhere south of Seattle, it probably isn't worth the drive up there regularly.
