    Medieval whacky-stab.

I KNOW it's not exactly fencing, but does anyone know of any clubs, or have any advice on how to get into medieval sworsmanship? Proper claymore stuff.

I've had TONNES of success with clubs in South Africa, but I'm not in South Africa!

    Thanks a million in advance.

    Steve.

I know there was plenty of that sort of stuff in washington st. where I used to live. After my dog classes they'd all get out there in their armor and stuff. Amyeb that's a good place to look for clubs?

This is my beef with the SCA... They are in armor (which is the plus over fencing) But they use Rattan and cardboard and other excuses for weapons.

I want real armor and real weapons...practically dying to see real jousting..but I know that won't happen.

(Oh sorry, I don't have an answer, just wanted to comment and I wanted to say that you had a great title for your post- it made me smile)

    Steve,

Check out http://www.aemma.org/ for some serious practitioners. They have a number of affiliates in various parts of Canada and the US. From what I understand, they have just come out with an excellent training manual as well.

Oh… just checked your profile and location. Try, the British Federation for Historical Swordplay (BFHS) at http://www.hadesign.co.uk/BFHS/welcome.htm

I was merely saying that while fencing uses real weapons it would be cool to see that displayed with using a shield and armor too. If one doesnt see "blood death and dismemberment" wearing cotton jackets and protectors, why would there be more wearing Steel armoring?

Goddess be, its a personal thought not a political debate.

    Tinasam,

I'm with you. I can barely control my laughter when I see two guys with duck taped sticks smacking each other.

there has to be a way to make it better.

I guess it makes them happy though.

    Latenight,

I think you mean duct tape, though yours really brings some funny imagery to mind.

While I don’t often let myself indulge in SCA bashing, I do agree completely (and it’s not just the armored fighting, but the fencing as well). However, there are TONS of better options now (like any of the links that I gave Steve or the links from those pages).

    Chris,

Yup, my brain got ahead of my fingers again!

I would not be surprised to see a duck taped to the top of one of there "swords" anyway.

My personal feeling is if you want to go pretend to be someone else for a day and get all dressed up in period clothes shouting "Huzzah!" all the time, the SCA is a good place to do that.

But like you said , there are way too many other, better options out there for swordsmanship.

    Chris:
thanks! I'll try that link as soon as I've posted this.

Re: tape: Duct Tape is the generic name. Brand names include Duck tape, Gaffa and Elephant tape, so you were both right. (Duct tape is the musician's best friend!)

    Tina:
I just couldn't think of anything else to call it, but thanks! lol

You can catch jousting during the summer anywhere in England. If you ever come over, I suggest Leeds Castle (in Kent, not Leeds).

It holds regular tournaments with Jousting, hand to hand and swordplay to Banquets and balls. It's also a really cool castle.
It makes for a great day out.

What's wrong with a little dismemberment? All good clean fun.

I'll never give up fencing, but I've always wanted to try some of the more 'Hefty' types of medieval swordplay!

    Thanks to all.

    Steve.

Whey! Just looked at the website... There's a club here who do training. I'm one happy bunny. Thanks, Chris!

Well, if you want to know, heres the silly part-real swords aren't more dangerous for fully armores sparring than those heavy rattan sticks they use. So, looking silly, for nothing....
Whats really funny though, is that the SCA has armor, talks about "blow calibration", when if you know who the Dog Brotheres are, they go full contact wearing hockey gloves and a fencing mask : ) www.thehaca.com Is another good place to start, and www.swordforum.com is another. "Medieval Swordsmanship" by John Clements is a good basical firstbook on greatsword/longsword (which would align somewhat with your "claymore") and sword and sheild.

Latenight -- AWWW thats got to hurt the ducks when they are taped to sticks like that LMAO!!

Steve -- I would deeply and passionately love to go to England sometime. And if I ever do make that trek I will definitely go in the Summer so that I can see that jousting.

Arcon -- I would do that in a heartbeat (go head to head with swordplay), albeit the matchups would look hilarious. I am 5'5' and weigh about 100 lbs, and me being lefthanded just makes me look funny trying to get in shots.

Thanks for everyone that shares my view of SCA vs. "real" swordplay. I believe that there are some that get off on playing dressup and some that really do want to live (albeit only temporarily) in Camelot.

I wouldn't consider the phrase "whacky stab" appropriate though. Frankly, IMHO, Medieval swordsmanship is a more complex and exacting art than modern three weapon. :-)

    Steve,

Glad I could help. Out of curiosity, which club?

Chris (counting the days to WMA when he gets to see all his out of country friends again).

It's the company of Maisters. Apparently they do training there, and it's just around the corner!
