It is.

Yes, as long as you are a masochist and enjoy being angry and frustrated all the time.

OTOH, if you want to enjoy yourself, you fence sabre.

Or better yet; épée.

It's an oxymoron to use "better" and "epee" in the same sentence.

Wow!!! Yipes, I didn't know (but I probably should have expected it) that there was so much controversy over this issue.

Don't worry about it. You don't choose the weapon, it chooses you ... so try all three and give each a chance.

No... you choose the weapon.

Or rather, you find out which one is the most compatible with you. As with a lot of things, your choice tends to already be made, you just have to figure out what it is.

Exactly. It chooses you, but since it can't talk, you have to find out which one chose you

It's like Harry Potter and choosing wands. You have to try all the weapons to find out which one is best for you.
That said, I still have never tried epee or sabre.

Welcome to fencing! Ok, here's the deal... most clubs (at least in the US) start with foil. I think the main reason is that foil skills more easily translate to the other weapons, than the other way around. Ok, I'm biased, I think foil is the best... but as others said, try all three and you will soon get a feeling for which you like.

Other advice:

-Find a club in your area that has plenty of people and feels good. Usually, if there are many people it's probably because it's a good place to fence.

-When you're at the club feel free to go up to people and make friends, ask questions, etc. Most fencers are friendly and willing to help out new people with all kinds of good advice and wisdom.

-Dont just go and take the class/lessons/whatever and then leave. You'll be wasting the most valuable resource you get with your class/lesson fees. Stay after the class and ask if people want to practice or drill, or fence... If there's no one to practice with at your level, but there are more advanced people fencing... watch! And learn!

-Find someone (or many someones) at your level who are equally motivated and see if they want to stay after class to practice. Ask your coach for good drills. Drilling is great, trust me.

-Practice your footwork. Distance is the most important thing in fencing and footwork is what gets you there. If you learn just one thing from this whole post, that last sentense was it. (Money back guraranteed! )

-And have fun.

You mean old, raggedy, of questionable odor and likes to control your life? No thanks; I've had my fill of those.

Hello Just wellcome to the forum.
For the beginners I sugest France, and when you start to fence with oponent you have to fence with pistol.
