Mists of Avalon Did anyone see Mists of Avalon on TNT last night?
I thought they did an outstanding job. I was a little worried that they might botch it, but I was pleasantly surprised. And they even got the period armor right... none of that "run around in plate mail all day long in the pre-1000AD days". Great costumes all around... and way cool leather and brigandine armor...
I can't wait for part 2 tonight. I'll even skip Junkyard Wars (probably a rerun anyway).
What did you guys think?

I loved the book too... I read it two or three times... As soon as I am done with the Amber Chronicles (about 1200 pages of fantasy), I'll probably reread my Mists of Avalon...

Having read the book when it came out I was also pleasantly surprised that TNT would come out with such a good show. Bummed that I can't see part 2 tonight, but it's fencing night! I'm sure it will be shown over and over again. I particularly enjoyed the "femal-ian" influence but had to reopen my copy of "The Once and Future King" just to keep my bearings. I also enjoyed re-watching "Excaliber" on AMC the other day, all armor issues aside. Great love story. -

Array amber chronicles, interesting you know: (another tidbit of info that i gather and store away), they found a whole tremendous load of amber, good amber in new york about 1995 i think it was, it was considered a tremendous find. amber being petrified honeycomb? is this right? I may read the chronicles, or try at least to browse through them to decide first if i want to buy them, the mists was very well written, author had lots of patience to deal with decriptive phrases, and the dialogue was a pain but it was authentically written. (read: An Army of Children) all about the 14th century wars in europe, and most of the army consisted of kids it was very grim reading. -

Array It is on right now, but as you can tell I am not watching it. It will be on again though being as it is on satalite.
Junkyard wars is great. I didn't know that anyone else knew it existed! "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

I only got to watch the last 45 minutes because of dear ol' fencing. Had morgase told Arthur about who the father of the son (Mordred) was? I should know this story, sheez. And, in the book was morgase actually good again in the end? Wasn't she supposed to be a bad guy (eventually, anyway)? I know morgose was, but I'm confused... Ack, sad ending, sad ending. The goddess and St. Mary thing was interesting. I'm going to go read the book...

Actually, Mordred told Arthur. Morgause just kept hanging out at Camelot to further influence Mordred and weave her tangled web.
It's been too long since I read the book, but I think they changed some things around in the second part (plus they cut out some stuff). As I remember it, Morgaine actually became the new Lady of the Lake. Plus, the Merlin had a successor. I would imagine they modified the whole Merlin thing to make it easier to understand for people who did not read the book. As it was in the book, Merlin was not actually a name, but a title, being the highest-ranking druid in the land (or something along those lines). But since most people see Merlin as a single person, they probab;y decided to modify that.

Haven't read the book, but thoroughly enjoyed the flick. I especially liked the strong role of the women. Not often seen in these types of film. -

Array i read the Mists in 1987 too long ago to remember much of the details, but for those people who enjoy the King Author type of book, it's one of the best, the author is able to convey a lot of emotion throughout the book. It's very long, which I like very much in a book, and i didn't find it boring -so the book didn't slow down very much. I ususally find sequels to be bad attempts at locating that exact impetus for writing the first book, although there are some exceptions. I only read Dune (the first one) did not read any others, only read Interview with a Vampire, and the second one, then passed on all the rest. I just cleaned my apartment this weekend, and went through all my books, I found I had about 10 novels I haven't read yet, and sorted through them. I would like to go back into the DUNE series again, i found it to be a sophisticated science fiction drama, that went beyond the typical fare of interesting characters with new and strange powers, the authors were able to create a mythos, and the ending of the book (and movie) was spectacular. The concept of space/time travel was treated in a unique format. My Avalon mode is on hold for now, it's a whole other mind set. -

Array the goddess thing/st mary thing/catholic/pagan/thing and whatever happened to ireland, etc etc. So, after the romans were finally converted from paganism to chrisianity, didn't they go into ireland and "convert" them? but because the irish are a stubborn people, they wouldn't give up their goddess thing, so the new irish-catholic priests, slowly adapted into a Mary mode (while rome sort of accepted it with reservations, because they felt that it was becoming a cult of Mary, and they would have rather had Jesus as the central figue. So all the credos of the early days of ireland were sort of wiped out by the romans, but they kept much of its mythology which is used alot in books like Avalon. But Avalon is Great Britian, England, where Mary didn't have a strong following, or is Avalon set in Ireland or even Scotland? or is Avalon, simply Avalon -
Avalon is in England. In the novel, Avalon exists in the same location as the monastery of Glastonbury (sp?), albeit hidden from view. So, someone without the knowledge on how to raise the mists will just end up at Glastonbury, no matter what they do... Marc

Array While visiting the tall ships on display in downtown Detroit, Willow & I saw a beauty called "Mist of Avalon"...I'm not sure if I have a picture of it, but I thought I'd share that with those of you posting on this thread. I thought it was funny that you'd be talking about it, & there would be a ship of the (almost) the same name! "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."
-- Rudyard Kipling -
Watched some of the parade on TV... there were some awefully nice ships out there... Marc
