| Choice of non-fencing activities, and their relation to weapon choice Hi!
My favorite non-fencing hobby is fishing, and more specifically coarse fishing. During a recent fishing trip, I thought about the similarities. Coarse fishing is about preparing a trap (choosing the correct bait on the hook), presenting the trap to the one who might fall for it (choosing the correct rig type, and presentation thereof), and finally acting correctly when the trap is falled for (different fish pull the float differently, and one has to identify the fish by observing the float so as to adjust oneīs reactions in order to maximize landing chanches).
Setting a trap, waiting for it to work, and then bang! pounce on it.
I am also a epeeist.
OTOH, fly fishers emphasize a beautiful casting technique, (non-beautiful casting gives awful results) and in general anything that is not done in an esthetically pleasing way is frowned upon by them. (They also have metal-adorned vests as their principal garment.) One f.net member who told of his fly-fishing preference is also a foilist, IIRC.
Coincidence? Perhaps, but I doubt it. Do you have personal traits which show both in your weapon preference and non-fencing activities? Letīs hear the funny, mundane, or quirky stuff!
Have a nice time!

| I play tennis, and always, i try to play an attacking game. It means that do not let the ball stay for long in my court ans try to hit the ball back hard and deep to the opponent. I know 2 other sabreurs who play tennis too. They play the exact same way...

| I've always enjoyed skateboarding, but it seems like few serious fencers do that as well. Just all the little punk kids who's parents bring them in once or twice and end up quiting. Grrr.
Ah, and I'm an epeeist.

| I read. I read a lot, and someone at work mentioned to me recently that "you're always reading hard books". I guess this makes me sort of an intellectual.
Naturally, I'm a foilist.

| I fence sabre; I'm also a very agressive tennis player. I'm magnetically drawn to the net. I once again, also read a lot much like the foilist that posted above and I'm a rabid fan of film and ultimate frisbee.... |

| I race motorcycles (hence the screen name), fly planes, golf, and go out dancing.
Epee, with the occasional sabre bout now and then for fun.

Not sure how these relate to Epee, though.

| I ride horses pretty seriously. I compete and win quite a bit, but how it relates to epee, I'm not sure. I guess it does have a bit to do with timing and distance though.
__________________ Friends don't let friends fence foil. Fencing is all about hooking up and scoring. If you want to find out about fencers, go up behind one as he faces a practice target. Burst a balloon behind his back. The foilist will immediately lunge at the pad. The epeeist will stand his ground, immobile but alert. The sabreur will swing round and assault you.
