| Need Chicago info My wife is planning on going to a (non-fencing) convention in Chicago in April. The venue hasn't been announced yet, but she wants to start making plans ASAP. Does anyone know what large convention facilities are likely venues in Chicago for a weekend-long, 30,000 person event? What resonably-priced hotels might be nearby for her to look at?
I know this is vague, but if you know Chicago, maybe you can help!
Thanks in advance.

| Update: my wife was told that the venue is the McCormick Place Hyatt Regency, or something like that. Problem is, it is not cheap to stay there.
Reasonable, nearby hotels, anyone?

| I dont know about the venue, but I can recommend other stuff. If she likes pizza, go to Uno's. They're the ones that invented "Chicago style" pizza, and by far the best pizza I ever had.
Mmmmm, pizza!

Reasonable, nearby hotels, anyone? | Not likely-McC Place is on the lake just at the south end of downtown. |

| Mr. Chucko,
The problem with McCormick Place is that it is somewhat isolated in respect to the rest of Chicago. So not staying at the conference location could mean expensive cab rides that would eat up whatever savings she would get staying someplace else. That said, there are a number of chain hotels in the Chicago loop that are somewhat upscale, and then some that are less expensive on the north side of the city. But again, you are looking at balancing out transportation costs.
If staying at the hotel is absolutely out of the price range, then I would say to check the travel sites: www.hotels.com www.travelocity.com
and the various web sites of the hotel chains for possible deals. Also, be sure to ask about whether tax is included in the rates quote, because taxes are heavy here.
Also, you can try www.metromix.com, which is more of an entertainment site, but search for hotels and you might find something.
Finally, this is the Chicago Transit Authority Trip Planner site. It can help navigate the city and includes walking directions. http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/
Good luck. |

| Both Ben and Epee have it right - not a lot in the McC area except the Hyatt - but what I wanted to add was that Hotels.com has a nice feature - if you do a search on a major city like Chicago, you can then pull up a more detailed search by landmark, and I would bet that McC place is on that list for Chicago - its a nice easy to use feature.
Good luck with that, and I second getting to Pizzeria Uno or Pizzeria Due (try Giordano's or Carmens in Evanston if you can't get there)
Enjoy!

| I have family in Chi so I usually stay with them, but when I do stay somewhere in Chi, I like to stay somewhere by the river, that way there're alot of places to eat. If I remember correctly, just around the corner from the Hyatt Regency is a little bakery. They had good muffins. I really liked Hotel 71. It's this really modern hotel just across the river from the Hyatt. It's interesting, it's quiet, it's near where she'll be, and I'm pretty sure it costs less than the Hyatt. The cheapest hotels are outside of the city though. Just a friendly warning... DO NOT DRIVE IN RUSH HOUR!!!! It can take you an hour and a half to go somewhere that it would usually take a minute to get to.

There are several Hyatt Hotels in the downtown area. |
