Talk about FENCING

Why are none of the topics about actually fencing, excpet for maybe the ducking in epee thread?

So, in sabre, how do you like to cause your opponent to break their attack? I like to extend my blade towards their face while moving backwards, and while they are thinking about it, hit them with a flank cut.

I like to do something similar with a point-in-line. Pull distance a bit, throw out a PIL, and then when they hesitate, launch into a quick attack. Often works pretty well.

All of the false tempo actions are much more effective if they are coupled with the right footwork--i.e., if you STOP for an instant as you make the threat, then jump or take a long fast step back out of distance. You just have to time it correctly so the other guy can't actually hit you.

I use two different actions on a false tempo--one, I extend the hand quite dramatically (basically shove the bell at my opponent's face), but keep the blade quite vertical. In the other, I basically make a false head-cut, with the tip going quite forward, but without extending the hand/arm.

Along with setting up a distance or blade parry (or taking over the attack), a false tempo is also very useful for setting up a real tempo attack... You do a couple of false tempos, then hit the other guy with a real counter-attack if he's not paying attention. Sort of a "boy who cried wolf" tactic...

True, another favorite of mine is a sort of check step with the stoppage of movent, followed by a jump back.
