Actually, that's what makes it witty. The point is to juxtapose the beginning and end of two common sayings to make a surprising and witty combination. The wit comes from giving new connotations to familiar phrases. It simply doesn't work if the phrases aren't familiar to begin with. This kind of humor relies primarily on the audience making a new "aha" connection, seeing a familiar thing in a whole new way.
