    WC Qualification Paths

Looking at the FIE competions for next season, I noticed there is an epee WC in Montreal, a mere 6 hour drive from my house. I'm going to go to watch anyway, but I have been told that non-US WCs that are still within the US zone are open to all US fencers who desire to participate. I looked at the athlete handbook and couldn't find anything that differentiated qual paths of WCs based on location.

My question is this: can I go get my butt handed to me or not?

I'm sure more knowledgeable fencers will be able to confirm this.... but I believe you are able to compete/ get an a$$ whooping for a mere $100* CDN & a FIE licence (*based on Vancouver entry fee).

Local athletes were illegible to compete at the Vancouver World Cup.… hang on… I know you are not Canadian, however there were WAY to many US fencers in Vancouver, which leads me to believe that they consider “North America” to be local.

Yes, they do consider North America local. Also, don't be so sure you'll get your ass handed to you-- I thought I would, but then 4 of 6 other people in my pool were also there to get their asses handed to them-- it's only maybe the top ~20 people of 90 that are really ridiculous.

Where is the list of FIE competitions for next season? I couldn't find it on the FIE site.

    Thanks!

    In the FIE Letters section.

Also available in FIE calendar page, but 2006-2007 is up from 2005-2006 (the default selection is the second in the drop-down list, which is non-intuitive).

If you are a male epeeist, yes you can go; If you are a female epeeist, since the WE is Grand Prix, only 8 US fencers will be able to attend.

But, considering that this will be one of the first competitions in the Olympic qualifying season, it will be definitely intense...much more so than a regular year.

Probably not. The top guys will earn olympic qualification via the grand prix - but every fencer on the bubble for national qualification will be busy checking the schedule for the best places to earn olympic eligibility.

The national office told me today that things this season will be different than last season as far as North American World Cups. She said that in order to attend this one you had to be in the top 24 of the points list. Which really sucks since I will already be in Quebec on vacation, hence why I called up and asked. I guess I could still show up and try to fence. Maybe they haven't gotten the word either...

Call the national office. I don't remember who I talked to but I think it was Corrine (SP?). Please, please prove me wrong and we can team up to show those FIE bums what some real fencing looks like!
