| Weight test hi
i was at the nutmeg state games yesterday. I used the same foil for my 1st and 2nd pool bouts. THe first time, it passed the weight test perfectly, but then it failed right before the second bout!
What causes this to randomly happen, and what can I do?
thank you!

| It just happens. The 'weight' spring becomes compressed during fencing and due to metal fatigue or whatever...
Change, or pull the spring out (ie' making it 'longer'), and you should be alright. By the way, I'm referring to épée, but I'm sure this applies to foil as well.

| Changing the spring is better.
Stretching the spring can help in an emergency, such as being in the middle of a tournament, however, one hard hit can deform the spring back to it's original shape and it could end up failing the weight test again. |

| Most weapons tend to drift over time - something about taking delicate, finely tuned systems and beating other people with them.
Many people choose to test their weapons at the conclusion of each bout - at the very least it gives them warning to change weapons before their next bout (thereby avoiding that pesky yellow card). |

| since no one else has suggested it - dirty tip!
Before you present a weapon for a test always give the tip a few twists and clicks (flick the tip in with your thumb rather than just press it in smoothly). Makes sure everything is moving well.
It's also a good idea to put 'tip cleaning the night before' down on the list for your pre-comp routine.

| For another emergency fix on the strip, try snapping your foil tip on the floor/table, and weight test it again before taking your yellow card.

It was suggested above by SJCFU#2 to test your weapon at the end of the bout which is a good suggestion.
If you ever get a weight of your own; have it tested and make sure it is illegally heavy, so when you test with a legal weight it will pass.
