| I hate to enter the fencing discussion thing: but it's always the same rant and it's justifyable: people do have problems understanding USFA. The calendar thing is the same though for many other professional organizations, the year ending is the same regardless of the date you join.
It does mess things up a little bit for some people, thought I don't understand exactly why other than it has the ring of 'not fair' to it. However, it coincides with University calendars.
The other part about not announcing things well in advance - lot of it has to do with your salle, your coach or university has to make all of the information available asap to all students qualified or not - then the USFA should make it clear about registration of events well in advance because it's an athletic event not a prom - and people need to gear up phycially. It has to do with the athlete knowing what is best for themselves - usually 3 months before something big comes around the fencer does more workouts - but for others they always fence competition.
But I do notice that some people get very personally tight with usfa and rely heavily on the nancy's and the stephanies. While I understand this, not every fencer has access to the same information - so by 'bugging' aunt Nancy, which has that nice cozy sound, it tells me that as an organization it needs to be bigger. It needs regional staff to work out the kinds of kinks and problems that some fencers have discussed over the years on the board. I can think of a few very good seasoned ex-fencers- who have worked very hard over the years to help fencers - one lady I know has been the regional secretary for over 25 years, she would be a great liason officer in her area - knows just about everything.
