    Hey :D

Hey everyone, I've always thought fencing was awesome, ever since I was around 9 years old, well I'm 14 years old now and I still love it, but unlike last time, now I have to green light from my parents to go ahead with fencing, I'm really excited. I've researched fencing quite a bit and would like to use the Sabre but will use the foil for a while.

Ok enough is enough, I need some advice... I live in Hawaii, there are no fencing clubs, and I doubt there are any classes here. I've seen the videos and books and I would like to get some opinions, should I get the books or videos, or just... lol wing it? I need some help here, any suggestions?

Welcome! Glad you can take up the sport. Foil is a great weapon to start off with, but it's also fun to compete in as well. Be sure to try all three, though. As for no fencing clubs in Hawaii? A quick check of the USFA website produced these results. Don't give up so easily next time. The best advice is to find a place to fence, listen to your coach, and have fun! Keep practicing the basics, and don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. These things can take time. Good luck, and welcome to the sport.

Yeah there are more than one Island, and the problem is, everytime I'd want to see my coach I'd need to take an interisland flight to Honolulu, I live near Kona on the big Island.

Are there any colleges out there that might have a club or class? Check with them and with Rec Centers or YMCAs, you would be surprised how many tiny little fencing clubs and classes can pop up in those things.

There are two clubs on Hawaii that I know about. Both are on Oahu. The first is "Hawaii Fencers Club" http://www.hawaiifencersclub.org. The second is "Salle Honolulu" http://www.sallehonolulu.com. If you get over there from the big island I would definitely check them out.

First of all, welcome to fencing and F.net. Best of luck.

Second, I'd say without a club or coach you are going to be very lost. Do as much research as you can. I'd be surprised if you didn't come up with something.

If all else fails try posting in the General Fencing section and asking if anyone knows. But please, last resort.

Still, the best of luck to you and welcome to the fold.
Characteristically, I had been trying too hard, and remembered again that wonderful piece of advice given by a French thinker: Trouve avante de chercher--Valery, it was. Or maybe it was Picasso. There are times when the most practical thing to do is to lie down.
