Array let's hear from swordman, what is your schick? whatya do for a living? where do you live? what do you fence? what's your story?
Bitter young man...well, not anymore. I was for a good long while (and life really wasn't even that bad), but then I moved (again), and it changed my group of friends - one of the best things that's happened to me for a long while. Now I hang out with optimistic, ambitious, good people, instead of the deppressed-for-the-show-of-it, I-hate-the-world-especially-America types.
So, not bitter any more. Especially now that I have Rayen, another one of the best things to happen to me in years (Hope you're reading this, dear).
But anyway. I'm a high school senior bringing some cash in as a stock-guy at a furniture outlet. I run track and cross country, and made captain this year for cross country. I live...well, I don't really feel like telling that. But I've been all over. "Home" really has a different meaning for me - and it's not the house I'm living in right now. What's my story? Well, that's a pretty wide question. Read my stuff on Fantasy Land and Nękos will tell you a lot of it. On the flipside, though...'home' is probably wherever Rayen is. I could write more, but you probably weren't even looking for this long an answer. It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. Array By the way (more on subject) - because I didn't get my school physical until this afternoon, I had to run today's and yesterday's practices on my own, at the park (instead of at school with the team). Man, I hate not running with somebody. That's one thing I almost forgot earlier: If you can find somebody to run with consistently, it is SO much better!!
Mile repeats suck. Five of them suck even worse. Five of them when it's just you is dang near impossible, when you're body's screaming "STOP!!"
A six mile run in noon-day (first two days of school were 11:00 dismissal, who knows why) heat sucks. When you are just running on your own, it's boring, painful, AND it sucks.
If I can give but one piece of advice:
RUN WITH OTHER PEOPLE, PEOPLE!! It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. Array Swordsman is right. Not only is it easier to run and to keep running when with someone, it's much easier not to skip running. If you have a partner who's going to be waiting on you and expecting you for your run it's much harder to no-show.
That said, my runs, when I run, have been alone. Of course this also helps explain why I go through periods of regular running and periods when I don't run at all. This is why I need a dog. (note: using a dog as a running partner is HUGELY dependent on the type of dog... taking a pekinese for a 4 mile run is stupid. As is expecting a St. Benard to be able to do much distance. If you go running with a dog there's a LOT more work (and planning) involved than grabbing a leash and Rover and taking off). Too bad I've pretty much decided that my weekend fencing schedule pretty much precludes gettings one.

Array Keep up the good work! See if you can't do more five mile runs, even if they are slow. We had a seven mile run today...or, were supposed to, and at 7:00 pace. Several guys were dropping, though, so we got cut off at about five. Man, that sucked. I was fatigued just going into the warmup, and I'm not sure why. My first meet (5k, or about 3.1 miles) is coming up on Saturday - and I'm feelin' good about it!
Wish me luck, I'll need it! It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. Array WOO-hah!! 17:59, baby! I can't think of a better way to start the season than beating last season's personal record (PR), and making my goal time that I never quite got last season - 18:00. Array I feel your pain - I haven't fenced in about a year and a half now. As for the race, that is a great idea - you need something to really challenge yourself! And don't worry, there will ALWAYS be somebody behind you. You could give half our girls' team a scare right now. My race wasn't quite 5k; it was actually 3.0 miles (5k is 3.1 miles, about another 150m). We had another race yesterday at my LEAST favorite course - supremely hilly, and a full 5k. I ran a 19:07; but still, that's a course PR. And you can't compare times there to any other time. Looking back at my running journal (another good idea) from yesterday, I realized that I ran between 13 and 14 miles throughout the day! Array No time to fence, let alone venue. There is, actually, a large fencing community across the river - but the commute would be prohibitively long. Hopefully, though, I'll make it into the Air Force Academy, in which case I'll very likely be able to fence daily with their world-class team.
Latest results: 19:14 in a race today, setting a brand-new season worst. The course was 5k, but flat and fast. Unfortunately the races were set up very funkily so that I was running without a single teammate; I don't run well at all on my own. Array Five miles - excellent! Just keep it up now, and try to start dropping times. You'll be in great shape in no time! As for running with people - I normally always do, both in races and practice. But as I said, this meet was set up strangely so that I had no teammates with whom to run in my race. It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.
