Saying thank you seems to be the nicest thing to say, but what are you thanking them for? "Thanks for letting me beat you" or "Thanks for beating me"? Neither make any sense. I'll say "good bout" if it was was a good bout, whether I won or lost. If it wasn't, then I won't say anything, but at least try to smile.

I always stuck with thank you... something along the line of 'thanks for the effort' or 'thanks for lesson' or 'thanks for showing up so I didn't advance via buy' or something like that. Though I just say 'thanks.'

"Thank you." Which for me is, "Thank you for allowing me to fence this bout." I love fencing, and every bout is another opportunity to enjoy it, and without opponents there could be no fencing. So thank you -- win or lose, good bout or bad -- for joining with me to make it happen.

I usually just make eye contact, smile, and nod. Most of the time I can't think of something to say in time, and I hate just echoing what my opponent says every time.

This is exactly why I always say "Thank you" and besides I think there is a chance to learn from every bout, when you lose as well as when you win. So my "Thank you" means "Thank you for allowing me to fence this bout, for having fun and for giving me the chance to learn"

I shake hands and say Thank you.

If it trully was a good and enjoyable bout I'll probably add something like Good bout, It was really fun fencing you, You're really good or something similar.

I wouldn't say I thought it was a good bout if I didn't think so.

Edit: I usually also shake hands and say thank you to the ref after a poule or a DE. Does anybody else do this, or is it just me being over-polite?

I say thanks, and lately I've gotten into the habit of a handshake and a "Thank you" to everyone in the pool once all the bouts have been fenced. I just like the mannerliness of it.

It doesn't usually occur to me to say "good bout" unless it was. Though I did get one great compliment from someone who defeated me: "You made me work for it."

To which they reply, of course, "Well, she says you're lousy." Or "No, that was our dog Rover."

if i got my butt kicked something like 5 0 or 15 0. i say godjob...because they did do a good job on kicking my ass.
if i beat them 5 0 or 15 0. i might say goodjob to try and keep their spirits up
usually though i don't say anyhting unless it was a good bout, then i say "that was f***ing awesome!"
