I'd say that the collegiate world is about 75/25 with Facebook. I'm on it. But I absolutely DETEST MySpace. I tried it and all I got out of it was a bunch of spam emails and transvestite friend requests. -

Array Facebook is helpful. Like when I would oversleep my 8 o'clock (I had an understanding prof, who knew that we were going to oversleep at least every other week, and didn't really mind....) I had the facebook, and I could use to to find people in the class and ask for information.
It's also particularly useful on MY campus to determine who you should hit on-- despite having the reputation of having an overwhelming gay population, we have something along the lines of 50% who self-report as straight. And people kind of tend to assume that if you're quiet about your sexuality, that means you're straight-- which means that there are a lot of either shy or private people who just don't get hit on, even if people had huge crushes on them--- well, pre-facebook, anyway.
There's also more privacy standard on the Facebook than Myspace, and a little bit more liklyhood that the person you think you're talking to is, in fact, that person. -

Array Yes, but then there are all those people from my past that I don't really care to get in touch with or even be briefly pestered by. "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

Array Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to be on the "right" side of the rejection for once RIT? "I cannot ensure success, I can only endeavor to deserve it" - Capt. John Paul Jones -

Just for fun, I once created a false person on myspace to see how easy it was to make a false person. http://www.myspace.com/johnorama
I think the result is self-explanatory -

Array but on facebook most everyone uses their real name or something along the lines of their real name and on the forums... we don't. there'll have to be introductions or something... -

Array Actually, a lot of the more active people know each other's names and identities, or at least have very good ideas. You can find out who people are pretty easily by the clues they drop. Array It's very easy if you dig through my posts or look in my journal and do a bit of cross referencing on askfred. Or looked up my club on google. Please tell me you can tell what my club is. Array yeah i googled your club actually. i rather enjoy watching the excitement from the sidelines though. and cross referencing people is one of those hobbies i try to restrict to facebook so as to minimize my stalker-ish tendencies. -
