| Fencers/Pilots I've noticed now and then a few on here speak of flying an airplane and it just got me thinking...
How many (if any, I dunno) of you out there are either pilots, or prospective pilots? Myself, I'm a prospective pilot... I've flown before, and have tons of simulator time, but racking up real-world time for your license is pricey! Anyway, I was just curious if there are any pilots/fencers out there. Any stories or other fun stuff?

| I'm definitely not, but I know four pilots (JAS 39 'Gripen' and Hercules) who are fencers.

Complete your service period (or stay on as long as you like) then you can go to commercial work while you are still young. |

| I fly now and again, but I don't have as many hours as I'd like. Planning on joining the navy as soon as I'm out of school.
If you are interested in aviation, go to an airshow. Quite a lot of fun. If you're young enough, there's this this thing they sometimes do called young eagles, where a local pilot takes you up for a little bit. |

| I go up with my uncle a lot, and fly under his supervision sometimes. As far as flying goes, I'm not too bad. I flew for hours on the sim before I went up, so I had a pretty good idea of where everything was at and how to monitor the instruments when I went up. And, yes, I had considered getting my airliners certificate... possibly my European Airline certificate... but it's an awful lot of travelling around all the time. I think I'd just like to get my private pilot license. I think I'd rather not "yvan eht nioj" (obscure reference # 3,261)... they really screwed over my cousin, and I don't think the military is where I belong. Helicopter flight looked interesting, but that's something you can't really even get a feel for off of a sim. Ah, well... I was just curious as to how many pilots were on here, and if there were any interesting stories to offer...

On-topic though, I have a friend who started flying and then took up fencing when he went to college. He made me so proud when he told me, because I had been telling him for years that he should fence. |

| Put me on the flying fencers list.
Although it was exactly 50 years ago.
In support of that, I rented the airplane for $4.50 an hour and the instructor cost $3 more.
I have about 25 minutes of flying stories if you catch me in a bar and buy me a beer.

| Wow! Cheap cheap cheap! Hell, even for 50 years ago I think that's probably cheaper than now. And I doubt I'll ever catch you in a bar... but if I do, you can expect a beer coming your way !

What the heck did you fly?! I wish it was still that cheap. I'm giving you a mental beer right now. |

| I've never flown a plane (actually the first time I flew IN a plane by myself was to go to a NAC...), but my coach is a pilot. The upshot is that I get a lot of tactical stuff explained to me by way of flying-related metaphors |

| CFI, Instrument airplane, glider; Commercial multi-single engine land, single engine land and sea, glider. BS Aerospace Engineering, Univ. Michigan 1983; Asst. Adjunct Professor, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
But my flying stories are much more entertaining than my fencing stories.
