So who else here is convinced that they have anthrax?

    I know I am:

This whole mess has now my hypochondria flaring up.

I've been a bit tired lately, had a lousy day at the gym today so now I believe I've got anthrax.

Went on the Web, did some research and now I'm convinced that every little ache or pain I have is the result of BW.

Damn, I guess that's why it's called terrorism.

Information: a blessing and a curse...

I thought it was anthrax, then I realized...

    I'm just pregnant!

    You're lucky!!!

    I wish I was pregnant...

Actually, I don't. As scared as I am of anthrax, pregnancy would terrify me more.

Thank God for the Y chromosome: spared the terror of childbirth.

    Moon, you're braver than I...

Seriously, you would go to a doctor to check if you had anthrax.

Would you believe I think I've got both, plus a brain tumor and possibly extremely early onset Alzheimers?

Yes, I am a known hyper- hyper-chondriac. The germ warfare thing is giving me fits. Just heard more cheery news from the Larry King Show. Apparently, someone, a legislator from somewhere, intimated that we shouldn't worry because we can treat anything they might spray us with using anti-biotics--has the man never heard of anti-biotic resistant strains, I sure have. Anyway tonight there was an infectious disease/germ warfare expert on. He said while that's true, the ability to use anti-biotics that is, at least with anthrax by the time you show symptoms, you're all ready pretty much a goner. Makes me wonder if I'm sure it's just my allergies acting up again.

Almost makes you long for a good old fashioned nuclear holocaust, at least then you stand some chance of being vaporized on impact and not knowing what happened. It certainly beats lying around coughing up liquified internal organs, or whatever--sorry, I've always been a bit gruesome and unfortunately being a writer, the vivid imagination comes with the territory. As an added bonus, I once wanted to be a doctor and am still morbidly fascinated with medical stuff--you know, one of those loonies who likes to watch the Operation on the Discovery Health channel. A little bit of knowledge is not good. Anyway, one more thing to worry about besides why I can't seem to remember anything anymore--someone suggested the stress of grad. school, but I prefer to think it's something more sinister.

    Anyway, I'm freaked.

Yes. And then there are the viruses ( to be correct, virii, I suppose ), which by definition cannot be treated with antibiotics, and the biological toxins, like botulinum...

More than a little off subject here......
I firmly believe no one should make money off this terrible deed of Sept.11th....but you can bet investors are switching to stocks that are most influenced by the changes since the incident. Im curious, what companies make gas mask? Does anyone know?

A woman who owns an army surplus store was recently interviewd. When asked, "Are gas masks effective in the type of warfare that is suggested?" She answered, "No."

By the way, damianip, thanks. I'm feeling more insane than brave lately.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but the idea scares me crapless.

Even if they were effective, they are almost impossible to get. In order to deal with this, I did a bunch of research to see if there was anything I could do. The answer is to depend on law enforcement and the military to prevent it.

I don't think there is long term growth in gas masks. I'd look into vaccines and anti-toxins if I were to make an investment. ;~)

Some online vendors of gas masks are allowing the laws of supply and demand to dictate their prices. So even if you could get your hands on one it would be outrageously costly and, in reality, futile.

    Some interesting facts:

The entire supply of anthrax vaccine is earmarked for the US military.

The vaccine is a multi dose regime (similar to the Hep vaccine) so you couldn't get just one shot and be safe anyway.

We are also very short of smallpox vaccine, since there was no real cause to have it until BW raised its head.

In the case of anthrax, we have to rely on prevention, early detection, and antibiotics.

As horrible as it seems, we're still safer, statistically speaking, than most of the rest of the world. Try to put it out of your mind and get on with your life, and the challenges at hand. I'm trying and I know it's hard. This humorous venting is one way of dealing with it.

Let's hope that the increase in vigilance protects us.

Yes they do. Take it serious. I do, because of my military background. I am a medic in the reserves who spent sometime on active duty, working at a chemical arsenal. I have seen a lot of things and I know a lot of things. Also just like in fencing never underestimate your opponent. In this case you don't get a second bout if you lose. You could call it direct elimination. Info without a spin, www.worldnetdaily.com and infowars.com . Also got to www.constitution.org and www.keepandbeararms.org. God bless the US.

I know that I have anthrax the military gave it to me in a shot. So I have anthrax. My own government gave it to me and my son.

all the guys who trade share in the "pit" were killed. they were brave just working there, the place is a zoo. different companies compete for shares, they yell and wave their hands and the only way those guys can tell each other apart is by their jacket colors, which is fun, have you ever noticed, the yellow jackets outbidding the green jackets, etc, etc,

and yes, you'll have symptoms, i thought i had a brain tumor after the first attack.

On the topic of gas masks... I did receive a little bit of training on this subject in the Air Force...

Basically, a gas mask by itself won't do you any good against bio-warfare, espcially virus-based attacks. A gas mask is nothing more than an air filter. While it can protect against chemical-based inhalants (plus you won't get anything in your eyes), it won't even do anything against contact-based agents. That's why you not only have to get the mask, you also need the rest of the rubber suit (called MOPP gear).

That'll do a pretty decent job in case of a chemical attack.

Biological warfare, depending on the agent, would probably require more of a space-suit approach. For visual reference, watch Outbreak or The Stand and you'll see hwat I am talking about. (Or read Tom Clancy... Executive Orders). Those suits have independant air supply and are completely sealed and then sprayed down with disinfectant. (Needless to say, too expensive and too complex to be operated by laymen like me).

In terms of speculations... Two or three years ago, a guy out west got Anthrax-samples by mail-order. So, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some terrorist organizations had biological weapons. If they are sponsored by a country, they could easily have access to chemical weapons as well.

Now the really scary part: nuclear material from the former Eastern Block has been smuggled and sold all over the place. A lot of it has been intercepted, but I am sure that some got through... so some lunatic might actually have a nuclear weapon stashed somewhere.

Anyway, just some food for thought.

to answer a totally different question with a related answer: i'm not eating beef anymore, i went off beef in 1984 then i started beef in 1991 on an off but then i decided no more beef, next is pork though i really like it, i'm probably going to stay with 75% vegetables/grains/fruits and 25% high biological value protein such as milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, some chicken and tuna, it's easy, and you'll help save the planet.

DID YOU KNOW~ (more facts) that the bovine emits methane gas which destroys the OZONE LAyer? There are a myriad of reasons why we should avoid beef.
