| The fingers are probably not going to catch many thrusts in sabre or foil. They are usually close enough to the guard to be pretty well shielded from anything but whacks. All of the ghastly recent injuries in sabre have been to the palm or wrist, so thinner finger material gives me no pause for my weapon.
For that matter I used to wear thick leather gloves, so loss of some tactile sensitivity is not an issue for me.
Like cups and the rest of the fencing gear, thicker gloves will probably feel uncomfortable at first. But we will get used to it soon enough. Don't be deterred by this angle; people looking for enhanced safety will buy them.
