| Flip-flop? I've always heard different ideas on this, so I wondered what y'all would say about it.
What defines a shoe as being a flip-flop? |

What defines a shoe as being a flip-flop? | By my definition they would be made out of the light 'foamy' plastic and have a strap between your big toes. Like this.

| Gotta have the foamy plastic/rubber soles. If the soles are leather, they're sandals.

| John Kerry!!!
About 2 years late, but I had to say it... sorry.
And I agree that a flip-flop is the foamy or rubbery kind. Or, I guess Leather if you count those Rainbow things. Flat sole, with a strap across the top of the foot. No strap around the heel/ankle. Thong between toes is optional. |

Although I did find the picture you're talking about when looking for flip-flop photos: http://sanibelgoldsmith.com/home/sg1/smartlist/3/0
Edit: Found it, it was Cutlass who posted it.

| Yah, can't really call 'em thongs any more. I like flip flops better as a name anyway.

| 1. Doesn't have an attachment at the heel
2. Made of rubber or something
Thus allowing it to flip and flop about, and make the appropriate sounds. |

| Flippity flip-flop (flĭp'flŏp')
n. The movement or sound of repeated flapping.
A backward somersault or handspring.
Informal. A reversal, as of a stand or position: a foreign policy flip-flop.
A backless, often foam rubber sandal held to the foot at the big toe by means of a thong.
Electronics. An electronic circuit or mechanical device capable of assuming either of two stable states, especially a computer circuit used to store a single bit of information. In footwear and fashion, flip-flops are a kind of flat, backless sandal that consist of simple soles held on the foot by a V-shaped strap that passes between the toes and around either side of the foot, attached to the sole at three points, commonly known as the thong strap. They appear to have been developed out of traditional Japanese woven or wooden soled sandals in New Zealand. This sandal is known by different names in different localities: - In New Zealand English they are known generically as jandals (Japanese Sandals), a name used by one manufacturer. However intellectual property law prevented the term Jandals being used when sold in other countries.
- In the United States, they are generally known as flip-flops, thongs, zories or go-aheads (especially rubber thongs).
- In Croatian they are known as sandale (sandals), but usually as japanke (japanese woman).
- In Australian English these are known as thongs or pluggers, and often are referred to as an Australian Icon.
- In South Africa they are also known as slops.
- In Hawaii, flip-flops are known as slippers.
- In India, they are referred to as chappals.
- In Japan, they are referred to as beach sandals, or gomu zories (rubber zories).
- In Mexico, they are referred to as chanclas.
- In Peru, they are referred to as sayonaras or slaps.
- In the Philippines, they are called tsinelas.
- In Argentina, they are called sandalias, ojotas or, less formally, chancletas.
- In Russia, they are called Vyetanmki (вьетнамки, Vietnamese)
- In Paraguay, they are called Zapatillas
- In Malaysia, they are called Selipar(slippers)
- In Czech they are known as vietnamky ("vietnamese shoes" or "vietnamese women").
- In Quebec, they are called Gougounes
And a Final FAST FACT: In late July 2005, some members of Northwestern University's national champion women's lacrosse team were criticized for wearing flip-flops to the White House to meet with President George W. Bush. Many weighed in on this controversy including Meghan Cleary, a footwear expert, who felt that a flip-flop denoted that the team was feeling very casual in the White house and suggested a closed-toe option instead for instances where decorum was observed. Cleary was cited on MSNBC's Connected Coast to Coast program as saying the flip-flop flap indicated a cultural shift similar to when blue jeans were first worn in public.

| hhmmm..i always thought a flip flop was a digital logic device whose output toggles between two states every time the input receives a logic level high.. |
