Same day team and individual events at SN Our club has a junior men’s epee team entry on Wednesday, July 5th. It is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Our team captain doesn’t have an individual event that day, but two of us are fencing Div 1A foil at 8:00 a.m., and our alternate is fencing Div 3 epee also at 8:00 a.m.
Based on the number of entries in the 8:00 a.m. events (D1AMF, D3ME, D2MS) at least one event’s pools will be delayed or flighted. Obviously it is impossible to predict the day’s actual schedule, but it is clear that one, two, or even three of our team members could be unavailable when our team is called to the strip.
So does anyone out there know how this might work in reality?
Will team epee likely get pushed back while they try to finish the individual events?
Will someone cut us a break if we can’t get three fencers on the strip when we’re called?
Or are we screwed?
Thanks -

Array When you fail to have a scheduled fencer on strip your team will receive a black card.
With 3/4 of your team fencing that morning you're running a large risk of having people not available when you need them.

I thought it was not allowed to enter more than one event on any single day (probably to avoid just the situation mentioned here).
Clarification? -

Array One may enter an individual and team event on the same day. One may not enter more than one individual event on a given day.
Properly done this doesn't cause problems. You have 4 people on a team and only need 3 of them. If your top person is fencing an individual event you list him/her as the alternate, if/when s/he becomes available, sub in where most advantageous. Only tricky spot is whether, by rule, all four must be present at the start/end of the match.
Okay, not the only tricky spot. You cannot sub during the first round (of the match), so make sure the listed starters will all definitely be available. If you list a fencer as the alternate the earliest s/he may enter the match is the 4th encounter.

Clarification? No more than one individual event per day.
I think that it's only one team event per day, too.
You are permitted to fence one individual event and one team event in the same day if the schedule permits.
But like oiuyt said, if you fail to report to strip when called (in either event), you or your team will forfeit the bout/match (black card). They won't wait for you. -

Array Sounds like you may have to tank in the first round of pools in order to have a team ready to go. /sucks -
We have to declare our team members the day before by 3:00 p.m., with no more than one alternate, right?
This is going to be tricky. -

Array Not this year. We're all fencing for our respective teams.
Seth is fencing for the AC, Cody's fencing for NWFC, and I'm fencing for DCFC. Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.

So he can fence his heart out in pools and DEs, and just take the card when necessary. -

Array Or, you could just be very very good. A few years ago, I believe that a team match was delayed to accommodate a bout where two members of the team were fencing for a gold medal.
If memory serves, the club was NCF. It's somewhat hard to say, "We're just going to exclude them, since they have the audacity to go out and make world team."

Array So, the rules do not apply to everyone equally, then?
I wonder where some of us get the idea that exceptions will be made for you if you're one of "the right people"... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array My first Nationals, I was very . . . impressed . . . to watch a team member get a nasty ankle injury which required the trainer and the necessary ten minutes from the arrival of the trainer on the strip, during which interval the missing member of the team arrived (still crying because she had just lost her DE in an individual event) to take her turn in the match.

Shaq will never be called for parking in the paint.
The Italian soccer team is never carded for diving.
Jordan never got whistled on fouls; contact was always his opponent's fault.
Ivan Lee never seems to get hit in preparation, even though he does that huge pull-back with his flunge.
It may not be right, but such is the way of things. In sports, the stars are always protected. (With the notable exception of hockey, where the attitude seems to be, "You're better, so suck it up.")

darius You make a world team and they might do it for you.
There is a difference between "the right people" and world class competitors. Anyone can become a world class competitor.
Did the other team make a fuss? Whoopee! My avatar is back. -
