Array I actually have never found Superman to be terribly heroic. How heroic is it to step in front of a bullet when you know for a fact that bullet can't hurt you?
And did you ever wonder why one of his descriptors is "able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound" when he can actually fly? In the beginning Superman couldn't fly, originally they just gave him the ability to jump really high. Turns out people like a dragonfly more than they like a cricket...

Array I would recommend reading "The Physics of Superheroes" by James Kakalios. He details the evolution of Superman and other superheroes. Kakalios is a college physics professor and uses comic book heroes to illustrate physics principles. -

I've been seeing it on the computer screens here at work, and at the last place I worked at, for the past like 8 months, I'm really excited to finally get to see it on the big screen, looks like it should have some impressive images in there. -
Ah, here's a cool little preview of some of the CGI stuff that they were working on for the movie at the last place I worked at: http://pdl.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/s...r_el_large.mov
There's also some end sequence stuff that they were working on with a lot of bad assed water stuff that should be awesomeeeee! "Life is like a wheel, where everyone steals, but when we rise, it's like Strawberry Fields." -

Array I've always hated Superman. I see the good times etched in your face. I see the good times, that were once in place. I see the bad times, lurking in your eyes. I see the bad times, through the shadows and lies. The mask you put on is easy to see. The mask you put on, is no match for me. -
I didn't used to, but I'm kinda getting to that point, still interested in seeing the movie. Andddd... Great new Spiderman 3 trailer... http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_p...n_3/large.html "Life is like a wheel, where everyone steals, but when we rise, it's like Strawberry Fields." -

Array I'm probably going to go see it at the local IMAX tonight... "...But that doesn't mean that sabreurs aren't fun. They are, and tend to be better kissers as well which is more than reason enough to take my coach's advice and hang out with the sabreurs my age." - WP (best coach advice ever) -

Yeah, he's one of the strongest superheroes in the DC "multiverse" but he's definitely not the strongest, and even lost occasionally...how hard must it be to be heroic under all the pressure of being expected to be perfect even when you're not? I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

I've never liked superman. He isn't human, invulnrable, he's just too good. This not only causes plot issues, but makes him rather hard to identify with. I think the first real human heroes came along after spiderman, the first super hero that your next door neighbor could be. -

Batman was a notable exception as were a few others. Hey, at least he wasn't Plastic Man or Superboy...talk about unrealistic. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array There are certainly some reasonable marvel characters that are just human that are reasonable (or, at least before the current stuff w/ the civil war, which I'm not keeping up with, so they may all be dead, for all I know). While some use crazy technology (Ironman, Antman/Goliath/Henry Pym) or magic (Dr. Strange), there are some (Hawkeye, Captain America) with neither, and all are simply considered extraordinarily talented human beings. Though I will admit that DC doesn't seem to have as many of them Though that may be my lack of knowledge of the DC pantheon. -

Array Umm. Captain America is not just a normal human. He had this wonderful thing called the super soldier serum. It made him a) not age as quickly as he should have, b) stronger, faster, and tougher than a normal man. It didn't put put him in the same league as say Hulk, or Thor, but it still made him way better than normal. -

Array And of course when people say Marvel introduced the first human characters, they mean they introduced the first people with normal(ish) lives and emotions. Batman doesn't qualify for this. He may have been extremely normal in his abilities, but his everyday life is anything but normal. He was able to be Batman more or less with the power of infinite money. While sure he was just like you and me physically. Also there was something about the writing of Stan Lee, compared to that of all the DC writers at the time. Stan Lee wrote characters you thought could actually exist- sure they may not have super powers in real life, but you still believed his characters could be based on people he knew. -

What the super soldier serum did was put him at the peak of human development...basically he is at the limits of how strong, fast, or tough a man could be. So he actually is a normal man artificially put to the extremes of his race's ability.
I do agree though, Stan Lee is the man. RebelFencer's Awesome Quote of the Week:

Array I like to think 'The Man' is his actual middle name. I know if my name were Stan Lee I would change my middle name to the 'The Man'. -

Array I think you're supposed to relate to superman on levels other than his powers..
First place, he has a weakness, like everyone. Its kyptonite.
His alter ego, Clark, is no don juan.
He has a secret he can't tell everyone.
I think his powers were for the "Wow, I wish I could fly" factor.
As far as realistic super heros go, The Punisher wins by a long shot. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -
