| Cross training - Swimming If I want to swim as part of my workout, is there any stroke more desirable than others? For example, any stroke that works muscle groups particularly suitable for fencing?
Thanks. |

Thanks. | I fear you have been misled.
Swimming is for heathens.
The true path lies in walking on top of the water.

Back to topic: The purpose of swimming (at least when I do it) is to build enurance with no impact, building some strength seems as though it's a side bonus. I would just recommend doing freestyle...although I suppose it wouldn't hurt working on the other strokes too.
PS: It is very possible that I'm completely incorrect.

| I swim everyday as part of my fencing workout. Using a kickboard while doing the "frog" or "whip" kick can really strengthen your thighs.
I guess the kickboard isn't really necessary |

| The only complaint I have with swimming is that I always feel very hungry after swimming.

| well for the endurance path, i'd say you could run. it's the best aerobic workout you could go for and strengthens all the muscles in your legs. in addition to your legs, running works your core (which will keep you from slouching over/leaning and showing your shoulder). also running hills will build up muscles in your shoulders. if you don't think that your abs or shoulders are getting strong as quickly as you need, you can always do push ups and other core exercises. i find running is something you can do anywhere, swimming is harder to do anywhere.

| I think swimming is good for working the aerobic system but when it comes to developing speed and power obviously you need the impact of dryland training (swimming is like anti-plyometric).
Good for cardio, but make sure you do your sprints too. |

| For cardio, I'd rather jump rope then swim. It translates to the sport better.

All I do in the water is tread. 30 minutes of treading, following by me trying to tread for 2.5 minutes w/ my hands above my head (not just for 2.5 minutes-- trying to reach up to that goal). |

| ...I guess jump rope would seem to be the best option as it does directly relate to the sport. Plus its just an insane cardio workout. Lap swimming works you to the bone as well. |
