converting a french grip to a pistol

i recently decided to convert to pistol grip. And i noticed to late (because im an idiot) that there are like 3 inches hanging out the rear of my grip cause i havent cut it. How many inches should i cut it so it fits my pistol snug?

Put grip on weapon. Get marker. User marker to mark where the grip should end. Remove grip. Get saw. Cut tang. Put grip back on. Rejoice, and perform backflip.

It usually depends on the pistol grip that you have. My grips very greatly in the amount I have to cut. So, I mark where the tang comes out of the grip with some whiteout, then I go about 5mm down from that to make my cut. Note that I use outside hex nuts. For Inside hex nuts you might have to cut off a little more than for an outside hex nuts.

See this http://www.fencing.net/forums/thread23961-post423066.html for techniques people use to do the actual cutting.

Helpful Hint: Screw your pommel nut on the tang to a point below your intended cut. Cut, then unscrew the nut. This will re-thread the tang where the threads may have been disturbed by the cut.

Most definately put the nut on beforehand, or you may never be able to get it back on unless you get a threading die.

Not necessarrily....a good Dremel with a reinfirex fibreglass cuting wheel works fine without damaging the threads.

The hex nut technique or spinning a cutting die on works wonders, though, if you use bolt cutters, because they defrm the end threads during the cutting process.
