| Pomme de Terre for the traveller Can anyone recommend any good restaurants to visit while we're in Waltham for the PdT this year? Last year, I just sort of faked it, and with terrible results. We are especially looking for Italian/pasta (carb-loading), and seafood (since we are in New England, after all.)

| I can't much help you there, since my favourite italian cooking in the area is my mum's, but for other places, there's the typical non-fast food chains such as 99s and whatnot. I am personally fond of the pub/restraunt just down the street from the BFC (by the Gore Place museum thingee) whose name I can't remember. It really depends where you are staying. For example, the Mariot on the Charles isn't really close to anything, let alone anything good. |

| There's this really good thai restaurant called the Elephant's Walk (it used to be Carambola) at 663 Main St in Waltham. It has a green awning. I actually only know where it is in relation to the BFC, not the gym where PdT is, but I know that on that street there are a lot of good places (well actually all I know is that and a good sushi place, but I've heard there are a lot of good places). |

For Italian I would mention The Chateau ( http://www.chateaurestaurant.com/waltham.html). Totally kitschy but large portions and cheap/fair price. They also can take large reservations.
For seafood it of course has to be Legal Seafoods, a Boston insitution. The nearest one to the venue is probably in Chestnut Hill (visit the website at http://www.legalseafoods.com). You'd do yourself a favor to reserve early.
Unless of course you want to try the other Boston insitution, the Union Oyster House ( http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/), which is located in Boston itself. Maybe you'll see John Kerry there.
For sushi it should be Oishii. A tiny tiny sushi place in Chestnut Hill that is highest rated in Boston. There is one table for 4-6 people and the rest are seats (which number about 12) at the sushi bar. I was a skeptic but then I went once recently and have been back a few times since. Again, since it's tiny, make a reservation. ( http://boston.citysearch.com/profile/4798498/)
For American, I'd say Not Your Average Joe's, which has been a good performer in Massachusetts and seems to have opened a bunch of locations recently because of that success. The Watertown location might be closest ( http://www.notyouraveragejoes.com/).
If you're venturing into Cambridge afterhours I would recommend Middlesex for those that want a NYC feel ( http://boston.citysearch.com/profile...ex_lounge.html) or my favorite low-key spot, Daedalus ( http://boston.citysearch.com/profile.../daedalus.html) for a less ruckus time.
Any questions on specific places or types of places I'll try to give some color.

| There are many in the Brandeis/Waltham area. The Brandeis coach, Bill Shipman, or his fencers would know of the many small restaurants nearby.
Many of you may be staying in Waltham at the Totten Pond/Winter St exit from 95/128. The Doubletree, Westin, Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, Home Suites (HOT free breakfast), and several others are there. There are more than a weekend's worth of restaurants in walking distance. I have been to and recommend the Naked Fish, Bertucci's (Italian) and the Green Papaya (Thai). There is also a Chinese/Japanese restaurant I have not been to and restaurants in the big hotels.

By the way, when is the PdT?

| Forget 'Legal Seafood'. It's overpriced for a consistantly mediocre meal. Try Naked Fish right near the hotels - there is also one in Bedford/Billerica. |

I haven't had good crawfish (well, ANY crawfish, really) in a long, long time. But, hey, just 'cause it's different doesn't mean it's not good.

By the way, when is the PdT? | Perhaps we just prefer seafood to swampfood.

| Yes, that large gulf coast population of Maine lobsters and cod, as well as your famous southern recepie for New England Clam Chowder will surely put you over the top!
As suggested above, for excellent seafood and the chance to see a Kennedy or similar, go to the Oyster House. Bring your wallet, though.... |

As for chowda, sheesh, add of copious amount of potato and half and half and cook till tasteless
Anyway serious seafood, Perth (australia) hands down. Or perhaps loch fyne oysters....

| Now, I realize that with today's transportations means, the seafood in Kansas can be just as fresh as the seafood in Newport....
But I know in Rhode Island, if you can't see the water from the restaurant you're eating in, you assume that it's not the freshest seafood you can get.
........... Not that that's always rational, but the fact that most New Englanders assume that fresh seafood comes from restaurants indicates that most seafood restaurants far from the water often cater to tourists-- not the people who live here and know where to get seafood.........

| "Fresh" seafood..... This brings back memories...
When I was a little lad, I used to go spearing while skin diving or SCUBA diving. Then bring the fish (or octopus) up to the boat, and right on the spot make fresh sashimi (sushi without rice). Good times.....
This, of course, was possible because I grew up on an island where water was so clean and clear you could see right to the bottom from the boat. And not a hint of industrial waste anywhere on the province.
So yeah, it was pretty fresh stuff. More like, "still flipping," fresh.
P.S. Any PdT referees reading this, I just got a confirmation from the organizer. Dress code will be same as last year!
