darius | Sigh of relief. So the referees will be casual, but the fencers won't be casualties.

It was just because all last season, I threw up a lot before competitions. Now I have a complicated system to avoid it.
The collapsing on the floor after winning two DEs at la bell, followed by a third bout, not always having taken my full 10 minutes..... that was due to the heat. and general stupidity.
I'm still bringing Ice packs--- even when it's in the 70s, in a room with that many fencers, in full sabre gear? I'm gonna overheat. Just not QUITE as bad.....

| Oh, did you vomit too? I witnessed one incident last year and nearly whoopsed myself, but I didn't know you did.
The Brandeis gym was a tad warm.

darius | "rainy" is somewhat of an understatement...
7 inches of rain over the course of 2 days is expected. Flood warnings in effect for most of eastern MA.

| I was just at Brandeis. The rain was coming down so hard that, if it happens during the competition, we won't even hear Mike when he gets a touch! |

| WOW!... and to think... its bright and sunny sitting here at work in Woburn. (Standard New England weather disclaimer: of course, that's subject to change drastically at any moment, with or without notice.)

| I think the gym last year had its own weather system in the rafters. There were clouds indoors!. |

Bran | I don't care how hip Middlesex is (debatable, as the MIT frat boys skulking around that joint tend to radiate anti-hip); If you're in Cambridge looking for a NYC feel, you're in the wrong place.
Now, if you want to buy some designer lentils or some baby clothes that are bong water resistant, that's another story... |

NO NO NO! PLEASE NO! I distinctly remember the head honcho saying, in no uncertain terms, in front of everybody at the tournament, "Next year there will be air conditioning!" Of course, I might have been in a heat-induced delirium at the time. They CAN air-condition the venue - just glance up at those air-handling devices overhead in the gym - they just chose not to last year because, rumor had it, it would have cost an extra $1000. For which I am sure the hundreds of fencers in attendance would gladly have ponied up a couple of extra bucks apiece to avoid heat stroke. |

| the air vents you see on the roof are merely 'heat exchangers' NOT air conditioners... they were running last year, but don't help much in the middle of the summer...
its a building on a college campus, most of the time, the school itself is done with it by mid-may, and doesn't need it again until the fall... they don't really need to have it air conditioned...
if it was air conditioned, it would be running... a $1000 isn't a lot in the budget of this event. (from where I sit anyway, but I've never seen all the actual numbers, so who knows)... but in any event... there aren't any air conditioners, so we can't turn them on.

| She did quote an extra zero you didn't, though, and rarely is $1000 chump change to an event other than a NAC. |

| oops... fixed the zero... my bad, i processed 1000, but for some reason only 100 came out of my fingers.
Pomme de Terre is that rare tournament... look at the numbers: http://www.neusfa.org/PdT/pdt2006/whosfencing.html
It is the largest annual tournament on the east coast.
There are 525 people registered and paid as of right now... just the registration fees for these people ($20/fencer) comes to $10,500... That doesn't even consider those who registered after June 11th and had the registration fee bump (can't remember what it bumped to, and don't want to go find the form right now, though it is on the division site if you're curious: http://www.neusfa.org) up... or the people who will walk in tomorrow and sunday and pay the $100 walk in registration fee, plus the event fees...
each individual event is another $35, and each team event is $55 total...
many of the 525 people are fencing multiple events...
trust me... $1000 really isn't that much...
but the point is rather moot, since there aren't any air conditioners to turn on.
Also, it should be noted that the division does not make much (if any) money on this event... it all goes back into the event (hiring referees, armorers, and other officials, paying officials' travel and lodging, awards, venue, pipe and drape, etc., etc...) it is about providing the best event possible for the fencers, and if air conditioning were an option, you had better believe it would be exercised... this year is the exception to the rule that 'pomme de terre is HOT'...
I really should get to bed, as I'm leaving for the venue in about four hours... but I'm trying to work up something else for everyone there... hesitant to say what it is, because I don't know if i can get it to work in time...
