| Rules on socks What are the exact rules on socks? Can they be two different colors (ex. one solid red, one solid blue), can they be striped, can they be polka-dot? Are there any restrictions on socks other than they have to go all the way up to the start of the knickers (not exposing skin).
Couldn't find anything exact in the rulebook or on the Search function. Only thing I found in the rulebook was "the fencer is permitted to wear socks with a turn-over showing the colors of his national team 10 cm high." What is a "turn-over"?

| ignore the turnover, its very dated.
They can be any colour you like, except black (i think, not sure if socks are defined as the uniform or not and i can't be bothered checking).
They must stay up. |

| If we're talking USFA, I think black is OK. If not, I'm in trouble! Two solid colors are OK, too. Our coach at UT has us wear a white sock on the front foot and a burnt orange one on the back.

| Here's a photo of champion Hungarian fencer Gabor Boczko's socks from here at the Grand Prix in Puerto Rico ... and these passed the FIE observer's and referees' scrutiny...

| I have worn my bright orange socks for awhile now, and not even the anal ref from a certain high school comp complained about them.

| I believe that per USFA rules, long socks of any color are fine. However, for USFA Nationals, the event packet specifically specifies "white knee socks" as part of the required clothing. Don't recall seeing that in the entry packet for NACs though.

Just saying, you're puting yourself at extra risk for a card of the tournament specifically says "white" socks.

| No one has complained about my Hello Kitty socks yet... then again, I'm not going to Nationals or anything and most of the locals are used to me by now.
I also have black socks, which have elicited no comments.

| For the most part, refs will only make an issue about socks when they don't cover all the bare skin or when they keep falling down. As a ref, that is all I look for. But I would consider also thinking about professionalism. Multi-colored, striped, or polka dotted socks always make me want to hit the person in the shin. And generally, they look stupid. |

| For local tournaments, anything is fine.
For national tournaments..... who knows.
I usually wear red and black striped socks, as my college team's colors are red and black. It makes me easy to find. Similarly, I find that if people have different socks, it makes it easier to determine who's who. (especially if the socks clearly indicate what school/club someone is from)

Plus, once you get to nationals, if you find out that it's an issue at all, then you will have lots of vendors from which to choose something suitable. |
