World Championship Game. Free and possibly fun.

    2001 World Championship Game!!!

    October 26 - November 1, 2001.

Select who you think is going to medal in each event and list them in the order you think they will finish for all three weapons, for men and women, and for individual and team events.
Although the third and fourth place finishers are considered tied for third, we are only allowing you to select one third place finisher for scoring purposes.

For clarity's sake, list your picks in this order (keep out personal comments and banter too):

    Women's Individual epee
    1.
    2.
    3.
    Women's Team epee
    1.
    2.
    3.
    Men's Individual epee
    1.
    2.
    3.
    Men's Team epee

    Men's Team sabre

You may not know who's who in international fencing so go to www.fie.ch and click on the link for Palmarès and Résultats.

    SCORING.
If your selection for first in an event is correct, you get 20 points.
If your selection for second in an event is correct, you get 15 points.
If your selection for third in an event is correct, you get 10 points.
If one of your top three pics doesn't place in the order you listed but does place in the top three, you get 5 points.
If you select all three medal winners in the correct order in an event, you get an additional 50 points. I would like to call it the Trifecta for kicks.
    Highest possible score is 1140.

Changes can be made up until October 25, 2001. Any entries or editing of your list after that date will annul your selection. Two or more people could have the exact same list.

This is only for entertainment purposes. Participation is voluntary and whining is not allowed.

The winner gets more than prestigeous bragging rights. The fencing.net webmaster, Craig Harkins, has offered to sweeten the proverbial pot.
1st place: a free training CD-ROM of your choice
    2nd place: Fencing.Net T-Shirt
    3rd place: Fencing.Net T-Shirt

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Speaking of healing and sad days, let's hear from some others on who they think will do well at the 2001 WCs.

Although the third and fourth place finishers (those who lost in the semi-finals) are considered tied for third, we are only allowing one third place finisher for scoring purposes.

I'll sweeten the pot for this - I'll provide a free training CD-ROM of your choice to the 1st place winner and Fencing.Net T-Shirts to the 2nd and 3rd place winners. (So, not just bragging rights on the line.)

All entries must be posted to the board or sent to webmaster@fencing.net via email by midnight Eastern Time on 10/24/01.

Have fun and pick winners. In the event of a tie, the entry posted first will receive priority.

Go to http://www.fie.ch/ to look at the current season's results for individual and team tournaments to get your research done.

    Cheers,
    Craig

    More idle banter.

So how do we differentiate who is third for our purposes?

Good question. The answer is whoever comes in third or fourth.
Example, you selected Canada to come in third place for men's team foil. If Canada ends up third or fourth, you get points for choosing them to come in third.

I'm sorry I didn't think of writing something about that before. This is all for fun and this is the first time I made up rules for a game like this.

With that said damianip, can you change your third place selections before the deadline? Thanks a bunch.

OK, but in team, there really is only one third place finisher. In individual there are two.

Meanwhile, I'll go clean up my individual selections.

Yeah, if you don't specify how to choose the third place finisher from among the choices we players choose, then I'm going to list a whole lotta folks for third place.

I think the thing to do is to list ONE third place person. If they don't fence off for third (unlike the Olympics), then if one of the two third place finishers is your choice, you win.

However, for those who've already chose two for third place, let's go with the pig rule: you'll get points for both if both finish third. Otherwise, you get no points if one or none of your choices finish third.

No, we will not allow for the pig rule because that complicates the scoring procedure.
One selection for a third place finisher. Because if your third place selection places second or first, you get 5 points.

Or just require that EVERYONE listed for 3rd place in the top 3. This obviously hurts someone listing multiple 3rd place finishers. Given that the ties weren't apparently fixed by the deadline does anyone else have any suggestion that's reasonable? Maybe take the first person listed as the 3rd place choice? Or the second under the reasoning that the most recent choice is what should be used?
