Array The year my sofa was made.
It was also the year C.W. Post introduced his first breakfast cereal, called Grape Nuts, although it contains neither grapes nor nuts (Post erroneously thought that the manufacturing process resulted in grape sugar and that the cereal had a "nutty" taste). If memory serves me... quite a few cereal companies got started around this time.
In July 1897 Guglielmo Marconi formed The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company Limited. He also gave a demonstration to the Italian Government at Spezia where wireless signals were sent over a distance of twelve miles.
Two years later, he established wireless communication between France and England across the English Channel..... oh I could go on... I love history!

02-17-1979. The combination to John Brown's top secret cache of spears with which he intended to arm free negros so they could aid his militant abolitionist movement.
Spears of course being the weapon of choice for free negros in 1857.
Oh... 1857 Take your time. Read carefully. -

Array Here's one for BrianH (and other Canadian History buffs)... 1857 the year David Thompson, British-Canadian explorer died.
For the rest of you... Joseph Gayetty invented toilet paper in 1857.
His new toilet paper was composed of flat sheets. Before Gayetty's invention, people tore pages out of mail order catalogs - before catalogs were common, leaves were used.
Unfortunately, Gayetty's invention failed. Walter Alcock (of Great Britain) later developed toilet paper on a roll ( instead of in flat sheets). Again, the invention failed.
In 1867, Thomas, Edward and Clarence Scott (brothers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) were successful at marketing toilet paper that consisted of a small roll of perforated paper . They sold their new toilet paper from a push cart - this was the beginning of the Scott Paper Company.
Who would think toliet paper would take so long to catch on???

Array Mr E is not only light on his feet but fast with his fingers… there’s not a safe he hasn’t cracked or a bra he hasn’t managed to open on the eastern seaboard…. You would be surprised the things he knows!…
Since you jumped in I can answer my own question! Yes I really wanted to....
1593 ~ The year the thermometer was invented by Galileo Galilei. His thermometer consisted of water in a glass bulb; the water moved up and down the bulb as the temperature changed.
Pretty cool eh?
Alright... no more history
