    BattleBots

Where have I been the last week?

Well, I went of to chilly San Fran (California sunshine, yeah right) for BattleBots!

We had a great time and had a bot entered in the SuperHeavyweight class (Ogre - at 324lbs). Comedy Central will start airing the event on July 10. Ogre will be in one of the televised matches and I'll let everyone know when.

In the meantime, learn more about it at www.battlebots.com.

    Cheers,
    Craig

    Craig,

That is cool! Some friends and I have been discussing at work about what kind of battlebot we would design, unfortunately most of the things we wanted to use as weapons were not allowed by the rules. C4 not allowed!!! Imagine that!

I watch the show when I can! I will look for your bot! Did you win?

    Hey Craig,
Hope you enjoyed the City where I first learned to fence and compete! (Many years ago!!!)
I coulda told you about the fog!!! I always knew who the tourists were because they were the ones in shorts and t-shirts shivering!!!

I was in jeans and t-shirts or long-sleeved t's the whole time. (I mean, who is going to work on heavy equipment with shorts?)

It wasn't the fog as much as the wind. Once we got up to Sonoma for a day it was great.

mango fever - I've been fencing since '84 (saw the 10 seconds of Peter Westbrook). I took a couple of years off and don't take lessons anymore, but I do go in to club to fence a couple of times a week.

Not into monster truck rallys if that's what you're talking about.

    Cheers,
    Craig

Battlebots is Ok but I actually prefer the UK version - Robotwars (the bouts are longer). Did you get to see the bot that walks like a spider? It looked pretty cool on the ad for the show that I saw but I missed the episode.

    Gav,

The UK version sounds cool. The worst of those shows is Robotica. I tried to watch it once and yawned all the way through.

The 10 seconds was the 10 seconds that the TV network showed of Westbrook winning the bronze in the LA Olympics in '84.

No more lessons now because I'm not putting in the time to get anything out of them. After coming back from a long time off I could do a couple of things. (1) Use what I know and bout as much as I can to stay in practice and concentrate on keeping my actions where I want them or (2) start taking lessons and adapt to what a coach wants out of me and have to be in 2-3 lessons a week in order to see any improvement.

I'm a decent fencer but won't be making any national teams and don't have time to put into a training regimen that I would need to in order to justify lessons. (If I'm going to train, I have to train all out. If I'm going to play, then I can play whenever.)

    Cheers,
    Craig

I have to agree with Moon and Christopher... Ogre really put one to Minion... You guys should have won, no doubt about that.

For the next version, have you considered using old epee blades as weapons on the bot?

Go to the BattleBots section of Comedy Central http://www.comedycentral.com/tv_shows/battlebots/

There's a picture or two in the Fights section.

    Craig-

Yes I have to agree that you were robbed there. It looked like Minion had the match for the first 30 secs or so but then you were the more agressive one. The only thing Minion should have slightly outscored you on was damage. But Orge definately seemed to win in the agressive and strategy catagories. He also won over the crowd which booed the judges decision. I noticed that the owner of Nightmare, in his interview, thought that the judges werent watching the same match that everyone else was watching. I hope that Orge will be coming back soon and that you will let us know so we can keep an eye out for the action.

    Good luck!

I was standing behind the driver (Shane) during the interview. Tom is the guy in the Viking helmet.

It was a good match. Fun to finally see on TV.

Also - if you go to www.robotcombat.com there are pictures of every robot that entered the competition. What didn't get shown in the interview with Nightmare's builder (Jim) is him saying how close the match looked. Judging the Ogre/Minion match was like trying to judge a close attack vs. attack in prep. in sabre/foil...somebody was going to be upset.

    Cheers,
    Craig
