Array Fencing in GMC commercial Not that this is amazing news or anything, but I'm watching the yankees get beaten around by the oakland A's and in a GMC Denali commercial, there was some pretty decent, tho way exaggerated and theatrical looking sabre fencing I think?
Infact, the last action they do, one of them parries and flunges (mostly up but whatever) to riposte...only he uses a point attack, over an opponant's low parry 5 + duck, I think.
It was pretty sweet, as fencing commercials go. Tho...I think when they zoomed in for the flunge riposte, I thought I saw them wearing foil lames....
(it was dark, now black and white but everything had kindof a silver tone so it was hard to distinguish).
Anyways. Anyone else see it? "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

Array I saw it but it was confusing.
The distance was very close, not Sabre distance at all but that may have been because of the video recording.
My impression was that they were fencers but not Sabre fencers. That last action was really weird.
Perhaps they were Foil fencers but the video people gave them Sabres because it would record better. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -
Wasn't this commecial already discussed like a montha nd a half ago? I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array I haven't seen that comercial specifically, but I do know of commercials for ESPN mobile and that calcium supplement- oh! I think it's called Viactiv, that have fencing in them, and a Got Milk? one too. There definately was a thread discussing this at one point too. -

Array I'm not sure what the action is but itl looks good on my little TV screen. Courage is fear that has said its prayers.

Array Can anyone post a link?
I don't have a TV. "When your opponent fears you, then's the moment when you give the fear its own rein, give it the time to work on him. Let it become terror. The terrified man fights himself. Eventually he attacks in desperation. That is the most dangerous moment, but the terrified man can be trusted usually to make a fatal mistake. You are being trained here to detect these mistakes and use them." -Frank Herbert, Dune -

Array I saw this commercial and they are definitely wearing foil lames. And that was definitely a flunge(ish) thing at the end. -

I saw the same commercial. As a GM Division employee myself, I was quite embarassed over the same. I called the head of advertising for GMC and told them of the mistake. He got back with me and the commercial has been taken off the air. Some dumb a$$ film maker ordered a bunch of fencing equipment (not know what to get) and used what came in?? The two actors were just playing around. Looked good though right?

Well, at least he didn't have it on backwards. I've seen two people now in the past week walking around with the old back zip jackets put on backwards, heh. -
Was the commercial taken off of the air because of the mistake? -

Andrew, the answer is "Yes". I know the heads at GMC well and they understood what I was talking to them about, also, how stupid it made them look since GM is a sponsor of the USFA?

Maybe it should be remade with you or someone as a technical advisor to make sure it was done right? -

Well, oddly enough, I told them the next time that they wanted to shoot a fencing commercial like the last one, to call me. I would use my GM corp credit card, order the stuff they needed in the right sizes and send it to them. Give them no way to goof up this time.

And I still have a bridge for sale near Brooklyn (not including the one BigDawg purchased).

Take him up on it, the one I bought is still serving me well. Very very well. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Array Being a sport that needs all the publicity one can get, I think complaining about it to GM is the least productive thing we could do. I have seen the commercial once or twice myself, and the error is tough to catch unless you're looking closely. If it makes someone call the local fencing club "because it looked cool" then does it matter if it's technically correct or not? -
Curmudgeon Emeritus
Array The optimum solution is a commercial that makes fencing "look cool" to the general public AND doesn't make any howling errors to draw criticism from fencers. Really, how much more difficult is it to go the extra step and get accuracy when you're spending $50,000 making an ad spot? Especially when someone offers you their expert help? Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! Similar Threads -
