Array Meghan-
The "research" section of your website still says that the papers and articles are "coming soon". When do you anticipate starting to have them posted? Until then do you have a (partial or complete) list of topics/titles?

-B Unfortunately, the research area was a great idea for when we had the time and resources to pursue organizing material in a presentable manner.
But we do hope to have something before the end of this year. Some examples are articles on recreational teaching methodology, historical interpretations and even a study by our Armorer on the average life span of various pieces of equipment (for equipment budget purposes).
The challenge is getting the time (and person) to organize the material and post it. -

Array If you remember, can you start a thread when material does go up?
Sounds like the articles are likely to draw interest from the community here.
(and sorry about jacking your thread)

-B No problem. Thanks for your interest. Now if you know of any fun fencing coaches for hire in the Boston Suburbs... -

Guardup has their own coaching philosophy/program so I suspect that applicants will be rated against and taught their methodology.

Coaching Certification Thank you, Craig.
Yes, we do have our own coaching program - however, we also have had instructors with USFA certifications.
Since our facility places more emphasis on fencing as a recreational activity as opposed to competitive, our primary concern is that students learn safe techniques (ie. instructors have to be able to teach safe lunges with proper foot/knee/hip position) and have fun in the class.
If a fencing coach with significant coaching and competitive experience wishes to teach a more competitive class, this is also an option - but we don't have many of these classes. Most of our students love fencing for the physical aspect (improved coordination, balance, etc) and social aspect (hang out with like-minded people).
Our coaches are paid not just to teach class, but for time to develop curriculum and for staff meetings. As well, we have a new program that *pays* coaches to take classes with our higher level coaches (yes, both the coach taking the class and the coach teaching the class get paid for the class) and even pays fees for some coaches to continue their training with other, higher level schools.
We place high emphasis on our coaches' training... but don't limit it to traditional methods.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly at (781) 271-1491.
Thank you!
