Yeah, but we're talking about weapons in general in all areas of the country and earning a first rating.

I'd agree that a weak A4 (and you don't really see strong ones outside of NACs) is a fairly easy way to get a C or above.

How do you define weak vs strong?

An interesting thing on FRED: I searched for A4 and "Women". No results. How many WS As are there?
As far as I can tell, FRED is only aware of 1 A4 Sabre tournament ever (outside of National tournaments, I mean), held at Nellya.

Several years ago (2003?) there were approximately the same number as MS A's (both were ~50, I think there were 2-3 more MS than WS). I expect both of those numbers have changed since then but don't have any more recent information. My 2003(?) report is in my office at school (I'm at home today) so I can't pull up exact numbers or confirm my recollection.

Last weekend's Mr. Ma Cup had a A4 event in Men's foil... just as a point of fact for the argument.

If you do good, you will only have the pleasure of knowing that you did good.

If you do well, you might pick up a rating.

Basically by its proximity to the minimum required for a rating. A tournament with 12 As, 12 Bs, 12 Cs, 6 Ds, 6Es, and 6 Us would be very weak, for example. A div1 NAC would be strong.

Mr. Ma cup has been an A4 foil tournament before I believe. I think it was even an A4 the last time I competed in it (which was a decent while ago).
