    Fencing in Edmonton?

    Hey all!

A friend of mine has recently expressed an interest in taking up fencing, but claims she can't find a club near her who operates outside of her work hours (8am-4:30).

Does anyone know of any clubs or coaches in the Edmonton, Canada area that may operate outside of these times?

I just went to the Aberta website and looked at the club listings. There are several in Edmonton, but this one had their hours posted.

I don't live in Edmonton (or Alberta, for that matter) but the Edmonton Fencing Club, run by Jujie Luan, would be a good club to check out.

From what I understand, they are mainly a foil club, but I might be wrong.

Here's a link to the club listings for the Alberta Fenceing Association web site http://www.fencing.ab.ca/clubs.asp

EFC is the place to go...unless you're a sabre fencer, in which case, the UofA is the place to go.

Jujie (the head coach at EFC) is a former olympic gold medalist in women's foil and a current member of the Canadian Olympic Team (Foil). She produces excellent fencers.

Sergei (at the UofA) is producing some top notch sabre fencers that are starting to make a mark internationally.

    Both are fantastic clubs.

    Hope this helps.

Dude.. chill... Epee fencing at Epic in Calgary is great. Catherine Dunnette, Darragh O'malley, Andrew Pickup, Brita Goldie, probably more people I'm forgeting.

    Really good coach too.

    Fencing in Edmonton

The URL to the U. of Alberta fencing club is: http://www.campusrec.ualberta.ca/fencing.cfm

During weekdays, both the EFC and U of A, for senior or rec. fencers, the hours are almost exclusively after "regular" work hours...

EFC is fairly expensive but has lots of pistes and equipment (for foil).

The U. of A. is fairly cheap but only has two real pistes and is a mish-mash if you need to use club equipment. They do fence foil there as well (mainly recreationally) but yes, they concentrate mainly on sabre.

Leslie rocks. Used to be the primary coach for Sherraine MacKay too.

Darragh and Andrew are just evil fencers...sneaky, snakey though not the least bit snarky. You'll like fencing at Epic (if you could figure out some way to stick to their floor, that is...).

We figured out how to stick to our floor. Add more varnish.

That stuff wears away pretty quick when you have a bunch of fencers training their a**es off all year
